Hoar Father pageEdit
Hi, I was just curious to know : why did you changed the missing words I added to one of the quote ? I mean, they are verified just like other words. Is there a specific site to give as source ? Kahvozein (talk) 00:54, 30 March 2020 (GMT)
- Where/how did you verify them? We don't have anything on the wiki that points to a translation for those words, so I assumed it was speculation. If there's an in-game text or official translation somewhere, that's what we're looking for. If you just got the translation off the web or from another wiki, that's not sufficient unless they're citing a reliable source themselves. If they are verifiable, then by all means, we can put them back on the page, though. We just want to be sure. Thanks! – Robin Hood (talk) 02:11, 30 March 2020 (GMT)
QuestionEdit
Hello!
Just wondering, when I add the user
to an unsigned comment, do I mark it as a minor edit? – Werewolfvampirre (talk)
- If that's all you're doing, then yeah, that would be minor. If you're actually replying to a comment, then I'd consider it a normal edit. It's not a big deal if you get it wrong either way, though. – Robin Hood (talk) 20:30, 9 May 2020 (GMT)

Effect Cell MechanicEdit
Hello,
I'm working to help add/update pages for the new alchemy reagents and runes, and their effects that were released with the Greymoor chapter. Could you help me understand why, after creating what I believe to be a properly formatted stub article on the Timidity effect, does the reagent list on https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Alchemy_Ingredients#Reagents not display the appropriate color for an offensive effect (red) nor the ON-icon-effect-Alchemy-Lower_Spell_Resist.png icon for the Timidity effect?
Thank you,
-Nate
- It appears to be working now. It may have just taken a while for the wiki to catch up to what you'd done. There can be a couple of reasons for this, but typically, purging the Alchemy Ingredients page would cause it to refresh properly. If you're not familiar with purging a page, you can do it either using a gadget (see the Gadgets page in your preferences, or by editing the page and then changing the

toaction=purge

Dragonborn page protection broke mod icon?Edit
Hello!
I noticed that after the Skyrim: Dragonborn page was semi-protected, the mod icon in the header now appears to be broken somehow, at least for me. It now shows up as this icon instead of what it should. Not sure if the page protection broke the header somehow or if it's just a weird problem on my end, but I thought I'd point it out anyway. — Wolfborn↝(Howl) 22:03, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- That appears to have been temporary, or possibly someone purged the page to fix it. Either way, it's good now. The utility we're using to save page data like that was written back around MW 1.10 and updated as needed since then, but it could really use an overhaul to fix these sorts of issues. In the meantime, the best we can do is purge the page and see if things get fixed. If not, then it's likely a template issue or something. – Robin Hood (talk) 22:10, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
-
- Actually, I just figured it out and fixed it. The Protected template was added after the Mod Header template and that was breaking the icon. I moved the Protected template to the beginning of the page and that seems to have fixed the issue. Unfortunately that idea occurred to me two minutes after I posted here. Anyway, it's all good now, thanks. — Wolfborn↝(Howl) 22:15, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

- Hmmm...in that case, that's something I'll want to take a look at to see what's going on there. Thanks for the info! – Robin Hood (talk) 22:20, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

- Hmmm... this gets stranger... I just tried moving the Protection template back to its old position, and a Page Preview came up perfectly okay for me. Not sure what the heck happened there now. I think I'll just leave this here and stop trying to figure it out... — Wolfborn↝(Howl) 22:31, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

- My first guess was correct, it was indeed the add-on that saves data that was the issue. It had been worked around previously and documented in the Mod Header docs, but apparently, I never fixed it on that page (or it got reverted at some point if I did). I'll have to see if there are any other instances like that. – Robin Hood (talk) 22:34, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

New templateEdit
Hey, I've been doing some work on the Tes5Mod:Beyond Skyrim: Cyrodiil namespace and wanted to ask a favour. Similarly to TR, which has Tamriel Data, Beyond Skyrim has BSAssets. I wanted to start add some stuff in that namespace too and wondered if we could create a new template akin to
? Ideally I'd like XYZ
being a link to Tes5Mod: Beyond Skyrim: BSAssets/XYZ
(I'd like to keep
for the Atmora release). Is this something you could help with? Thanks! --SerCenKing (talk) 20:24, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

Another Broken Mod Header IconEdit
Hi Robin
I noticed that the Mod Header icon for the Markarth DLC is not displaying properly; it shows this:
instead of the icon (as seen on this page, for example). I can't for the life of me figure out how or where to fix this, so I thought I'd give you a heads-up. — Wolfborn↝(Howl) 00:33, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- I've fixed the template to not spit out code. As for the icon itself, it needs to go in between the two bars in

on the redirect page. – Robin Hood (talk) 01:11, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello sirEdit
Now that you are over 50 I should call you sir, hopefully you remember me :/ after all these years I'm back, kind of. Nostalgia drove me to play TES 4 and some 5, better yet, to come back to editing this pretty place, get ready to clean after my mess ;) How are you? hopefully well awaiting your reply--Wizy (talk) 04:23, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- Wow, now there's a name I haven't seen in a long time! I'm not doing all that great, tbh...a lot of health issues. Setting those aside, though, I suppose things are well enough. How have you been? Hope you're enjoying TES 4 and 5! – Robin Hood (talk) 05:23, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

- Sorry to hear, I was really hoping your health would be better now, I have been very good, I left because I didn't have the time. As for the games I'm so rusty I can't play them on max difficulty anymore, I'm shamefully playing them on medium difficulty this time around and.. still dying alot. :P glad to see you are still rocking this site. Item Data TemplateEdit
Hey, I've been working on some Beyond Skyrim items pages and wanted to use the Item Data template in some tables. I've come across a small issue though: is there any way to overwrite the template's default of linking to Skyrim pages? For one item, the tempering is by using a new ingot added by the mod, but the template won't accept the link (see here). Any ideas? Thanks! --SerCenKing (talk) 15:37, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, done. It works exactly the way you did it in the second example. Let me know if you need anything else! – Robin Hood (talk) 20:25, 31 December 2020 (UTC)

Account CreationEdit
I’m having trouble creating an account. It repeatedly didn’t accept user names or information then eventually it gave me a error message saying my IP address had already created an account and a second could not be created in 24 hours. However I have no access through log in and did not receive any emails stating one was created. What can I do to get an account activated at those point? My email is Rodney.Hurtig@gmail.com
- This seems to happen on rare occasions to some users, but we're not sure why, since most users have no issues at all. Just let me know what account name you'd like and I can get it set up for you. (Or, if I'm not around, any other wiki admin can help you. Most of them can be found on our Discord, if you want to speed the process right along.) – Robin Hood (talk) 03:27, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
ApologyEdit
Hi Rob! I notice you added your signature to a recent CP post which I had tagged as unsigned. I hope I didn't offend you or break an unwritten rule by doing so--I must admit it felt weird to be adding an unsigned tag to one of your posts. If I did cause offence I apologize--I didn't mean to do so or to step on any toes. If there's a different procedure for informing admins that they forgot to sign a post, please let me know. Thanks! — Wolfborn(Howl) 01:48, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
- No, not offended at all...more embarrassed. You did exactly what you're supposed to do. That's why the template is there, and while it's unusual for long-time members to forget to sign a post, it happens. Some will leave the template in place, others won't. I'm in the latter group, so once you'd pointed out that it was unsigned, I just updated the signature. Your other option would've been to ping me on Discord and let me know I goofed, but in this case, it wouldn't have done you any good, as I wasn't around at the time anyway. Either is perfectly fine. – Robin Hood (talk) 02:00, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
Floating a suggestionEdit
I'm working with the template
- Showhide
So naturally I thought of you.
Some examples of possible values the button's float parameter would be helpful.
Known
- float = right (the [show/hide] button floats as far to the right as it can. Current default.)
Unknown
- float = left (I can see no difference - does header text erase it?)
- float = center (I can see no difference - does header text overwrite it?)
- float = adjacent (does not exist? - button would immediately follow the text of header)
- float = below-left (does not exist? - button follows text of header on a new line below, prior to but not necessarily above content)
- float = adjacent:Read/Done (does not exist? - a way of changing the button's text)
- float = adjacent:Tell_Me/Got_It (does not exist? - again a reason to change the button's text)
I've tried Nephele's suggested link, and I get:
- "Wikipedia does not have a template with this exact name."
- Our site does not support the Wikipedia.org template I did find
- Hidden begin XXXX Hidden end
I'm sorry, but I don't know the app or code used to make Templates or I would attempt to change it myself.
- I'm hoping for a reply like: "Hey Kal, try this [link] for method and coding."
- Or easier for me: "Here's a list of possible values, good luck."
- Or easier for both: "Here's a link to possible values."
- Or best for everybody: "We now support the template: Hidden"
Kalevala (talk) 15:35, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
- Wikipedia probably moved their template, so the link is now broken. I've added some basic documentation and pointed at where to find more information. The short of it is that all those values correspond to CSS properties. For some of them, documenting the full set of values would be beyond the scope of the template itself. I'm hesitant to link to a specific site for CSS documentation, as links tend to break, but I think what's there now should cover the most common needs. – Robin Hood (talk) 16:26, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
Gallery is OK, I'm not.Edit
RH, I am so sorry. I had a major brain fart. Let me trace it. I went to
- Category:Map_Images
- Category:Skyrim-Map_Images
- Category:Skyrim-Map Images-Interior
- Category:Skyrim-Map_Images
on which there were 192 images. Something seemed wrong. There should be more with just under 680 interior pages, I went to:
UESPWiki:Skyrim Map Design#Interior Maps Status Report and opened up the Interior Maps Cells List [show]
I transfered it to a spreadsheet and got a count of 195. Where was the discrepency? I concatenated a list of URLs for the 678 pages. Then I wrote a Visual Basic routine to check each URL for validity. I noticed that page for Kagrumez wasn't in
-
-
- Category:Skyrim-Map Images-Interior
-
But the URL was valid. The page is old enough, but when I pulled up the page, there was no ==Maps== section. So I began searching for others, but somewhere along the line I confused: UESPWiki:Skyrim Map Design#Interior Maps Status Report with being the category rather than dependent upon the category. My bad, I'll revert them to <Gallery>. The real culprit was omitting the ==Maps== section.
Again, my apologies. Kalevala (talk) 03:47, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
- No worries! BTW, normally if someone messages you on your talk page, you should respond there, to keep the conversation together. The assumption is generally that they'll be watching for any replies. – Robin Hood (talk) 03:50, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
Is this worth pursuing?Edit
I actually use the following code to place pogs on a map, I was wondering if this or something like it would fit onto UESP? I would like to share it, but if there is something taboo, I won't press the matter. What do you think?
<!DOCTYPE html> <!-- proposal & donation to UESP by Kalevala, May 5, 2021 ---> <!-- a short javascript and html page to help "poggers" find the x and y locations on a map for the pogs ---> <!-- otherwise it is a tedious trial and error -- click Show Preview, estimate a new position, repeat ---> <!-- needs further testing since it was only tested in: Firefox, ---> <!-- needs a user friendly idiot proof method of entering the file name. ---> <!-- needs a graceful exit to load another file or quit ---> <!-- needs the capacity to work with maps outside of its containing folder ---> <html dir="ltr" lang="en-US"> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> <title >Pog X and Y Locator</title> </head> <style> #screen-log { width: 384px; height: 384px; position: relative; background: transparent; border: 1px solid red; } #report { width: 180px; height: 20px; position: relative; border: 1px solid blue; background-color: yellow; } </style> <script language="JavaScript"> function readMouse() { <!-- endless function to keep reporting x and y values for as many pogs as you want ---> var elem = document.getElementById("report"); screenLog = document.querySelector('#screen-log'); document.getElementById("screen-log").addEventListener('mousemove', logKey); function logKey(e) { <!-- function reports the X,Y location to the element ---> elem.innerText = `. Kalevala (talk) 02:26, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
- This relies on Javascript to put the pogs on the map, so while it would work for most, it wouldn't work for everyone. Given that we already have templates that do the same thing, even if not very efficiently, it's probably best to just continue using those. – Robin Hood (talk) 04:00, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Template temperanceEdit
At the risk of becoming a nuisance:
I went exploring into the Template: name space. Wow, there are 2,263 templates as of today: May 20, 2021. This year, if it continues, will see a total of nearly 900 templates, and will approximate 1/3 of all templates ever produced. It is not an exaggeration to say the template growth is currently on an exponential scale.
Then the sad news, I went to some of templates and there is virtually no documentation as to what they do or how they might be used. The contrast is stark when you look at the Template: NewRight with its explanation, parameter listing and examples from 2009, and also from 2009 the Template:Chart/cell!b which offers no information nor is there much of a hint in its name as to how it might be used.
Perhaps we need a template saying something to the effect that "This template lacks documentation and may be removed unless the editors using it offer some documentation or can point to instances of its use." Of course, I would prefer they provide some documentation, but implementing such a template would be a policy decision above my pay grade.
Let me add that I am thankful for Help: Templates page, but this proliferation of templates may warrant a review of this page with an eye toward what really useful new templates ought to be added (if any.) This is the basic problem with any large aggregation of data, how does one find what is really meaningful.
Thanks! Kalevala (talk) 00:15, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
- Most of the templates that don't have documentation are actually subtemplates (which you can tell, for the most part, because they have a slash in the name, just like any other subpage). Template:Chart/cell!b, for example, is part of the Chart template, which has over a hundred different subtemplates for the various permutations of lines. It would be redundant to document them all. A better way to tell which templates need documentation is to use the Wanted Templates page. The ones ending in /Doc are the ones that need documentation. As you can see, there are only three of them (at least as of when I wrote this). The one limitation to that page is that if a template doesn't transclude a documentation page at all, it won't show up there. Take Skyrim Settlements, for example. It has no documentation. But then again, it hardly needs it; it's obvious what it does. I suspect the same can be said about most, maybe even all, other templates that don't specifically transclude documentation pages. If you do find one or more templates that are non-obvious and where the base template isn't documented, feel free to post about it in the #wiki_technical channel on Discord, or you can always post to the talk page of whomever seems to be the most active editor for the template on its history page. If that person isn't around anymore, let me know and I'll look into it. – Robin Hood (talk) 00:55, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
-
- Just FYI, a quick check of our database says that there are 1164 base templates, out of which 649 of them have explicit documentation. About 140 or so are navboxes which I assume don't have/need documentation.
I have no easy way to tell what the rest would be, butit sounds like we're not doing too badly. (edit: list, if you're curious) – Robin Hood (talk) 01:16, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

- I am sorry to have broken things, thanks for the reversions! There is another part of me that wonders; shouldn't really important templates such as this be protected from the likes of me? Something along the lines of "This page is currently protected so that only template editors and administrators can edit it." followed by your /Doc subpage advice on documentation edits? It would be great to have such a template to defend important templates. Again, my apologies. Kalevala (talk) 20:16, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

- We do indeed have that ability and a template to indicate it, but page protection has to be done manually by an administrator, so we tend to reserve it for only the templates that are used on thousands of pages. Chart didn't used to be popular enough to qualify, though it's possible that that's changed, since I believe some of the popular ESO templates use it. We do have to periodically re-evaluate what's popular and what's not. (TBH, I hope Chart isn't that popular yet, cuz I don't fancy manually protecting 100+ subpages.) – Robin Hood (talk) 22:05, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

(←) Forgot to follow up on this earlier, but I went through our top 100 templates earlier and protected any that didn't already have it. Chart didn't come close to that, though it's still used on a couple of hundred pages, most of them in Online space, which is why it was noticed so quickly.
As for documenting subtemplates, I don't think it's really necessary. The Template Subpages category pretty much tags any of those as being what they are, and any necessary documentation will be on the main template page. If you want to look through the list to see if there's anything there that needs documenting, though, we'd definitely welcome that. Even if you do nothing more than pruning out the obvious navboxes and messages that don't take parameters and therefore don't need documentation, that would be a huge help in itself. You're welcome to edit my sandbox to get rid of those entries, if you feel up to doing that. – Robin Hood (talk) 06:10, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
- Subpages always have a basic breadcrumb to the main page unless overwritten, so anyone who stumbles upon a subtemplate should be able to navigate to the main template to hopefully get a vague idea of what its purpose is. Additionally, I'm of the opinion that Doc pages should list its ancillary subtemplates, which I've done with my own template documentation (e.g. Template:Blades Creature Table). I don't, however, see much use in subtemplate documentation. Most subtemplates serve a very technical purpose to their main templates and are not intended to be called like normal templates. The standards we have for normal template documentation exist to serve the editor who may use it, i.e. informing on the parameters and the template's intended usage. Anyone who is looking for the more technical information can/should crack open the template code via "edit". I do not think there is a sizeable population of people somewhere between "editor" and "templater" who would benefit from that kind of documentation. However, my previous navigability suggestion would be a great improvement to at least display where a user could go to dig deeper. Dcsg (talk) 06:42, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Category:Template Documentation (not working correctly)Edit
Go to Category:Template Documentation. A, B, C, seem to be correct but D has things from all over the alphabet. Then if you click next it begins at D with the first entry "Artifact Summary". If you click it again, it throws up the exact same non- alphabetic list and you make no progress into the 651 entries.
I looked at the <catpagetemplate> and I could make some sense of parts of it, but concluded that correcting it was beyond my current skills. You were listed in History as the most recent editor so I thought I would alert you. Kalevala (talk) 19:42, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
Here was my attempt to break up the code and look at it logically. Any mentoring comment would be appreciated. Kalevala (talk) 20:54, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
<code> <catpagetemplate> {{#define :catlabel <!-- variable name --> | <!-- end#ifeq & return value for catlabel --> <!-- ??? end define?? --> <!-- end#ifeq --> }} <!-- ??? is this end of first define?? --> {{#define:catgroup <!-- variable name --> |{{#sub:{sortkey} <!-- variable value --> |0 |1}} <!-- end value --> }} <!-- end#define --> </catpagetemplate> </code>
- Catpagetemplate is useful for formatting, but I don't believe it's able to do anything to the sort order. To be sure, I temporarily stripped the catpagetemplate altogether to see if that had anything to do with this or not. It doesn't.
- Oddly enough, this appears to be MediaWiki's fault. Their documentation clearly states in several places that default category sorting is based on the page name without the namespace. Testing it a little more deeply, however, it seems like it's based on the sub-pagename. This means that most of our /Doc pages get sorted as just "Doc", thus putting everything under D. I've been removing the sortkeys when they matched what I thought the default was for ages now, and I apparently never checked that this was actually the case. I want to confirm that what I'm observing is actually correct, but once I've done that, I'll probably run a bot job to fix the various Category:Template Documentation calls so that they sort as expected. – Robin Hood (talk) 22:08, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
-
- Apparently, this is back to being our fault. UespCustomCode—one of the site's extensions with (as you might imagine) a lot of custom code for our site—implements a customized DEFAULTSORT that's based on subpages. I would assume that this is for the various mod-spaces, so for now, I've disabled the customized sorting outside of gamespace. That seems to be working as expected (meaning MW's docs are correct as written). – Robin Hood (talk) 22:36, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Vandalism?Edit
Hi - I just noticed you'd reverted an "inappropriate comment" on my talk page way back on 8 August 2021, without further details available. I'm curious: since I've been fairly active with location and other page edits over the past couple years, were there any specific related questions/concerns raised by the user as part of the reverted comment, or was the comment solely another attempt by a rando oddball to deface the wiki (as I've seen occasionally, and as I suspect)? Thanks for all your work! - Mikeprichard (talk) 08:10, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
- I just checked and it was an IP user disparaging the site as a whole. They made reference to your edit, here, but what they thought was wrong about it, they didn't say. – Robin Hood (talk) 14:47, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
About Creation Club contentEdit
Hey man! I find that locations added to the map as undiscovered by the Creation Club is features, not bugs. I already changed one to reflect what I think. I personally think they were intentionally left by the developers. So I think they are features, but I may be wrong. I am editing in good faith. Cody9867 (talk) 16:49, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
- I'm not the one who added that, so it's not me you need to talk to. :) I can see why someone would call it a bug, especially since most or all creations now have a specific start-up event that triggers them. That's the point at which I would expect a map marker to appear. I'm pretty sure it's not the only one to show up on your map right from the start, though. If I recall, Hendraheim does that as well. So, it could go either way, really. And you don't need to worry about whether people think you're editing in good faith. We always try to assume that. – Robin Hood (talk) 19:04, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Broken RedirectEdit
Hi Rob! I was just looking at the Broken Redirects page and noticed that Template:Mod Icon Data/Doc redirects to Template:Mod Data/Doc which you deleted about a week ago. Presumably this redirect can be deleted as well, since it now points to a non-existent page. Just thought I'd give you a heads-up. Cheers! — Wolfborn(Howl) 09:13, 4 February 2023 (UTC)

UndoEdit
Why'd you undo my comment on my nomination? From what I can tell, comments from nominees seem to be allowed, I was using the precedent of Tyrvarion's recent nomination where he left a comment. I feel as though mentioning that I have, indeed, technically been editing since two years ago is helpful to my nomination. Overall though I'm not mad in any way, just curious so that I don't make the same mistake again, if there is one. Mindtrait0r (talk) 13:22, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. It was completely unintentional. Probably an accidental click that I never even noticed. – Robin Hood (talk) 20:17, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
- I just looked at it a little more closely to figure out what I'd done wrong. It's clearly a case of hitting the "rollback" button, which is (unfortunately) a one-click button that admins have, intended to revert bulk spam. You can tell that that's the case because there's no reasoning provided, which I definitely would have done had I been reverting deliberately. Given the timing of it, my guess is that I clicked on it accidentally while moving my mouse/keyboard around just before bed, which is why it took so long for me to realize my error. Sorry once again! – Robin Hood (talk) 20:26, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
- No problem! I'm sure it happens every now and again, one-click and all. Thanks for addressing it and keep up the good work! Mindtrait0r (talk) 21:02, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

One-Eye's Guard Dialogue is considered vandalism and obsecenityEdit
I was trying to put in an additional dialogue line that female guards would say if they caught you committing a crime. It was considered vandalism, which I don't know why. The word c o c k y is considered vulgar.
Here is the original dialogue:
- "Don't you get (word that is considered nonsense or obscenity) with me, criminal! Pay your fine or face my wrath!" — Unsigned comment by 99.229.138.52 (talk) at 22:45 on 12 March 2023

Links, Tables and Templates, Oh My!Edit
Hi Rob
I was trying to add quest links to the "Quest Related?" column in Oblivion's Ayleid Ruins table and have run into a problem. If I change the first line of the table from:

to

the link shows up all right, but the word "Yes" changes to lower-case (i.e. "yes") rather than being capitalized. I've tried to figure out why, but the reason has so far eluded me. I'm thinking it most likely has something to do with the table using the page sub-template. Since you're the template guru and the person who converted the table to the template format, I thought I'd ask to see if you can help me out. Any help, explanation, clarification, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! — Wolfborn(Howl) 01:16, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- The good news is that I can explain what's happening. The better news is that I've modified the template to allow what you want to do, though it removes the safeguards, so you're on your own to make sure it's cased correctly.
- What's happening is that it takes the entire second parameter, converts it to lower-case (
yes
), then converts the first character ([
) to upper-case. You can see why that's a problem. :) I've added aquestrel
parameter now, though, that allows you to put in whatever you want for the second field, so just addquestrel=
before the second parameter and you should be good to go. – Robin Hood (talk) 02:20, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
-
- Thanks for the explanation, and for tweaking the template; it works like charm. :) Someday I'll really have to exercise my brain and wrap my head around this template stuff. Cheers! — Wolfborn(Howl) 04:49, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Namespace(ish) questionEdit
Hi Rob, hope you're well. I'm looking to create some info pages for the Beyond Skyrim Morrowind - Bonemold Weapon Pack (e.g. here, here and here) but I paused when it came to nomenclature. Given the mod is a minor release from the BS Morrowind team specifically, I think it'd make more sense to use Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind/ABC
than e.g. Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind - Bonemold Weapon Pack/ABC
for things like the NPC and Items pages. For the "main" page though I was debating whether it should be Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind - Bonemold Weapon Pack
or Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind/Bonemold Weapon Pack
, with my preference with using the former (and treating it a bit like a "quest" for the Morrowind project). Is either preferred for either consistency across other namespaces and/or for templates to work properly? If I then wanted to redirect Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind
to Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind/Bonemold Weapon Pack
like we do for Cyrodiil and Bruma, would that cause any issues (guess it's a bit circular)? Thank you! --SerCenKing (talk) 13:45, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- I think, from what you're describing, the best bet is to create a BSM space on its own, which'll give you the
Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind/ABC
style of pages you're looking for. For the main page, you can create it wherever makes the most sense to you, but if there's any chance that there'll be more BSM content in the future, then we obviously don't want to have trouble disentangling the Bonemold Weapon Pack from everything else, so I'd suggest the following:- Create the main page at
Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind - Bonemold Weapon Pack
, like you want, and create a permanent redirect to it fromBeyond Skyrim:Morrowind/Bonemold Weapon Pack
. Wares of Tamriel does something similar where Beyond Skyrim:Wares of Tamriel/Main Page is a permanent redirect to Beyond Skyrim:Wares of Tamriel. - For the time being, also create a redirect from
Beyond Skyrim:Morrowind
to the BWP main page. Then, if we have additional BSM content in the future, it's easy to replace theBeyond Skyrim:Morrowind
redirect with a proper page and everything else will just keep working like you'd expect.
- Create the main page at
- Does that make sense? – Robin Hood (talk) 16:06, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- PS, I just created the Beyond Skyrim: Morrowind (BS5M) pseudospace, so feel free to start experimenting with it and see if it works out. If not, we can always adjust it as needed. – Robin Hood (talk) 16:10, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
- Great, thank you very much! I'll have a play around now with redirects and the like, and get back to you if anything breaks :) --SerCenKing (talk) 19:55, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
Asking for confirmationEdit
I was trying to fix one of the references on Lore:Dagoth Ur (I hadn't realized my previous edit accidentally duplicated the reference dubbed "Dagoth Ur's dialogue with the Nerevarine in Morrowind") but it told me something like "due to repeated abuse edits from this range have been rate-limited" and I was told to contact an administrator and ask for confirmation. Can I like, ask for that, or is that a special people thing? SAT0rii (talk) 14:49, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- It's very much intended for people to ask. It's pretty much for anyone who's running up against our vandalism filters but isn't actually a vandal. I've given you confirmed status for a month, by which point you should be long past the auto-confirmed status anyway. – Robin Hood (talk) 15:34, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
Talk Page Reply on Wrong Page?Edit
Hi Rob! I noticed you left this reply on the Bug template talk page. I think it was supposed to go on the Bots page instead? — Wolfborn(Howl) 20:00, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yup, just noticed that when I saw Arthmoor's reply. Oops! – Robin Hood (talk) 20:23, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Skeletal Mage has two pages.Edit
There are two Skeletal Mage pages. ON:Skeletal Mage and ON:Skeletal Mage (skill). The former is the one that has user edits but the latter is the one edited by the HoodBot. I was going to pop the proposed deletion template on the (skill) page but figured I'd bring it straight to you due to the bot editing that one. Thanks, --Sir Quackberry (talk) 12:29, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yup, that would've been the appropriate course of action. For whatever reason, the bot seems quite insistent on creating the "(skill)" version of the page. I'll have to take a look into it. Thanks for letting me know! – Robin Hood (talk) 18:01, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. I've got some other things I've noticed here and there with bot oddities and something else I wanted to discuss that in-part involves the bot. Do you mind if I DM you on Discord about them? --Sir Quackberry (talk) 12:21, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
- By all means, feel free to DM me. – Robin Hood (talk) 13:41, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Namespace table templateEdit
Hi RobinHood, I've been playing around with Riven a bit and I made this, a template for automatically generating a table with links to the same subject across different namespaces. Would such a thing be useful? If so, I'll write some documentation. And if not, are there any new templates that have to be made, or older ones that need an update, that I might help with? Unfortunately the template currently has a major limitation, it only works for small datasets (~30 kb output max). Do you think there is a more elegant way of accomplishing the same thing, maybe even without using parser functions? Mermaeus Hora (talk) 21:57, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- If it'll be useful anywhere, it would be in Lore space, which is somewhere I don't edit much, so I can't really give any feedback. You might want to post a link to it in Discord, though, and see if any of the Lore editors can think of somewhere it would go well. Interesting style of table construction. I don't think I've ever seen bulk replace used to simplify the syntax before. They're usually just a mess of template syntax (or, sometimes, people will use a sub-template to keep it clean). Very nice. – Robin Hood (talk) 05:06, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for having a look at it. I'm not yet entirely familiar with all the ways to 'program' on WikiMedia pages, for instance I couldn't find anything like a for-loop or data structures other than strings. So this was the best workaround I could come up with at this time. Unfortunately I don't have Discord, but I might make an account (don't really have many accounts, took me years to make on here :P). Anyhow, in tried making something more useful hopefully today, an attempt to extend the functionality of Template:Bullet Link by adding a fast way to link to multiple articles. I've tested it and it seems to work fine with any backwards compatibility test I could come up with. Do you think it's a useful addition? If so, could it benefit from 'subst:', I'm not yet entirely familiar with the way it was used in Template:Daedric. Mermaeus Hora (talk) 01:43, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yesterday I forgot about the 'altname' parameter, but now it should work. Can I update Template:Bullet Link with my current version? Or does it require some changes I might have missed? Mermaeus Hora (talk) 18:10, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- Generally speaking, it's okay to make changes directly to a live template, provided it works and doesn't break anything. Using a % sign actually would break any number of things, since both wiki links and URLs use percent-encoding for abnormal characters. Typically we use a ~, which is certainly an easy fix. My question with your proposed change, though, is whether people would use it or not. Even though it's longer to type, I suspect most people would simply resort to typing something like
Lore:Ale, Lore:Flin, Lore:Sujamma, and Lore:Mead
or even just typing the full line out by hand, since it's what they already know and it's something everyone understands.

- Answering your internal question in that template, the extra ' is because #explodeargs' separator parameter now accepts quotes (', ", or `) surrounding it, so you can have the separator be a single space by using
separator=' '
, for example, without getting the space trimmed off by the MediaWiki parser. So, because you have paired apostrophes at the start and finish, your attempts to use bold are being interpreted as opening and closing quotes. If you want to make it more obvious that they're not part of the wiki syntax, just switch to " or ` for the first and last.

- For your questions on programming, you're right, there's currently no such thing as a for-loop, though you can emulate it using something like

. There's a popular extension that adds genuine for-loops, but we haven't discovered a need for it so far. Another option is to use
, which then calls a Lua module in Module space, bypassing most or all of the traditional template syntax.

- There are no data structures other than strings because templates are, in a sense, just really complex text being put out to the page, so from a certain POV, you only need text. That's a gross oversimplification, of course, and doesn't always match reality, but I believe that was probably their thinking. The exception to that is if you need to do math, there's

, which allows a variety of operations assuming that the arguments are numbers.

and got sick of copy-pasting that em dash. I noticed that my additional functionally made it much slower, for instance this page took 0.9 instead of 0.46 seconds to render, according to the "Parser profiling data" table on the preview page. Nice to learn there is a option to use Lua, have some decade old modding experience with that language so after a quick refresher I should be able to make something. Go to say though I had a lot of fun puzzling my way through the limitations of templates (is it theoretically Turing-complete with the addition of explodeargs?). And definitely learned an lot of new things, which was the goal when I made those two sandboxes. Hopefully in the future I'll be able to use the knowledge to make something more useful. A bot request and a template questionEdit
Hi Rob! Two quick ones from me which I'm hoping you can help with:
- I've recently gotten round to creating the alphabetical Factions pages for Beyond Skyrim. Any chance I could get the bot to create the individual faction pages, redirecting to the alphabetical ones? Don't know if that's possible but would of course save me quite some time :)
- Small thing I noticed on the NPC Summary template for trainers added by Beyond Skyrim: the template wants to link to
Beyond Skyrim:Trainers
rather thanBeyond Skyrim/Cyrodiil:Trainers
(see e.g. here). Something fixable I hope?
Thank you very much! --SerCenKing (talk) 20:42, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
-
- Yes, I should be able to do that later today.
- The link is now fixed (after many stupid edits to SkipLink...gah!). – Robin Hood (talk) 21:26, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, the redirects are created except for that sic'd Ice-Wind Trader on Beyond Skyrim:Cyrodiil/Factions I. I'll let you figure out what to do with that one yourself. :) – Robin Hood (talk) 01:52, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- Amazing, thank you very much! Will try to figure out a sensible way round the sic'd faction... Also apologies, I now realise there's a whole page for bot requests - will use that in the future! --SerCenKing (talk) 07:24, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
GSI TemplateEdit
Something is causing the GSI Template to add a line break before the links, as can be seen here. The template itself hasn't been edited recently, so I'm not sure what's causing it, but since you're the template guru I figured you'd be the best person to figure out what's causing it. — Wolfborn(Howl) 02:38, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Quick question, if you don't mindEdit
...regarding the quest "Missing In Action".
As a result of the incomplete part of the quest (diplomatic route), would you happen to know if it is impossible to avoid stage 40 to end up as "failed" when doing this quest?
I suppose I could add this question to the respective quest's talk-page, but I've got a feeling I'll have a greater chance of a quick reply (or a reply at all) if I ask someone directly, and going by what I've seen over the years when browsing this wiki, you seem prominent enough, as well as recently (or maybe even near constantly) active. ^^
Thanks in advance. TTRM (talk) 14:46, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- It's possible to complete it successfully if you have the Unofficial Patch. Apart from that, I'm afraid I don't know. There was nothing obvious in the CK, but it's very easy to miss stuff. – Robin Hood (talk) 17:48, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response. ^^
- I'm sure it won't have any consequences in any way at all whether it does fail that objective or not. Was mainly just curious.
- For the record, running Special Edition without the unofficial patch.--TTRM (talk) 20:13, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- Another question, if you happen to have the answer. (Just gonna keep all my (potential future) questions contained within this section here. ;) )
- For most temporary buffs, such as Shrine Blessings, Gift of Charity, general stat buffs, etc., the remaining duration is displayed under Active Effects and accurately shows the remaining duration for each one.
- However, for Well Rested, it merely says ".....8 hours", regardless of remaining duration.
- I'm having a suspicion that the buff provided by the bed in Vlindrel Hall is a bit buggy; I keep sleeping before heading out, but find myself without the buff well before the expected 8 in-game hours have elapsed.
- Would you happen to know if there's a console command that can actively display a buff's remaining duration in the HUD? Looked through the list of commands (text-search "display"), but came up empty. TTRM (talk) 13:48, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of any such command, unfortunately. That's an interesting bug you've found, though. Never noticed that before. – Robin Hood (talk) 16:38, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- Every time I play, I seem to stumble upon something new... Usually a bug or glitch. lol. On a brighter side of things, the second Persuasion Speech Check for Brother Verulus appears to be working as intended in the Special Edition. (The Taste of Death). One less Markarth-bug to be bothered with, I guess. ^^ TTRM (talk) 17:17, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- You know.... I'm starting to suspect the Well Rested issue I'm having isn't related to the bed in Vlindrel Hall, but rather with the age of my file.... Currently, this file sits at 367 saved hours (and more than a full year of in-game time; 7th of Frostfall, y202). Perhaps it is related to general issues that occur (some of which are already well enough documented) once a file has endured an extended amount of lifetime (or something like that)? Another issue that recently occured (about a RL week ago), was Carlotta (Whiterun) and her daughter refusing to continue their daily schedules anymore; They're both simply stuck outside the market stall, standing there 24/7. I can manipulate them into buildings by talking to them, exiting the conversation, then entering a building before they finish talking, but that would just break them more, as Carlotta wouldn't return back outside to her market stall, rendering her inaccessible as a merchant. lol. (At least I won't have to worry about Mila's Goldfish requests.... already completed those. ^^ ) TTRM (talk) 15:09, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

(←) Disabling the NPC and re-enabling them is often helpful in cases like that. If that doesn't fix it, I'm out of ideas. – Robin Hood (talk) 16:54, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Was considering doing a disable/enable, but I'm a bit stubborn; Even if it would be beneficial, I refuse to have any console command usage logged in the save file. ;)
- In regards of Well Rested.... I have arrived at the suspicion that it simply retains the duration remaining from initial aquisition, and does not refresh it when sleeping again while it is still active. Grabbed a screenshot of the in-game time when I last aquired it. Planning to sleep again shortly before it expires, then see if my new suspicion about it is correct. Will update accordingly. TTRM (talk) 19:05, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- You know how a picture can say a thousand words? Simple math would dictate that a minute of footage would say about 4 million words. ^^ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euy5kgPG8tw
- There appears to be a mix of things going on here. Slept at 7:44 AM, buff expired at 11:55 AM. Reloaded to before it expired, then slept again. Buff still expired seconds later. So not only does it not refresh the duration, but it also only lasts just a tiny bit above 50% of listed duration. Weird stuff.... Now I can't help but wonder if it was like this from the getgo, all the way back to the start of the game. Too lazy to start a new file to check though. Nor am I tempted to scroll down through the list of 1500ish save files to get back to the beginning of this file. This also debunks my initial mention of Vlindrel; This clip was captured at Windstad Manor. Wonder if anyone else has experienced this bug, or if my situation is an isolated case. Can't see anything too relevant about it on the Sleeping talk page, aside from a mention that, even in an editor, Rested/Well Rested does not seem to display any duration.... Wouldn't even know where to begin to properly document this potential bug. Feel free to take the lead on it with the info here provided. If more info is needed, I'll try my best to provide what I can per request. TTRM (talk) 20:22, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'd suggest asking what to do with this in Discord, cuz I'm not sure myself. I use UI mods, so things work very differently for me. – Robin Hood (talk) 22:07, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not really on Discord, unfortunately. I'm kind of oldschool when it comes to online communication. ;)
- And something highly unexpected happened today; Bethesda dropped a new official patch on Steam for the Special Edition. I'm sure a lot of people over here on uesp is all over it already by now, updating pages and stuff.
- A good number of seemingly important fixes in the list. Unfortunately, I can't see any mention of one of the bugs I personally find most bothersome; Previously harvested plants forgetting they've been harvested when saving and reloading after they've regrown. (I know there's an unofficial patch for it.) One change does catch my attention though. A new console command: "KAH" (Kill all hostiles). this could save me an amount of time when I'm troubleshooting random things, allowing me to clear out stuff instantly, rather than having to click on each individual target, possibly also having to reposition to get remaining targets into FOV. Will be interesting to see if it'll work or not. (Not gaming today.) TTRM (talk) 18:25, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Incorrect number of furnishings in a furnished houseEdit
Hi,
There is an error in the number of furnishings in a furnished house.
The "furnished" version of a house contains all the furnishings of the "unfurnished" version and has some "additional" furnishings. Therefore the number given there is not “total” but “additional”.
The same Template:ESO House Furnishings is used for the calculation in both cases.
Current example: Online:Enchanted Snow Globe Home
- unfurnished: 59 (total) furnishings
- furnished: 87 (additional) furnishings
The furnished version of the house therefore has 146 “total” furnishings!
I was in the house myself and did the math :)

- The best person to talk to about furnishings is Erorah. She's pretty much the expert on that. – Robin Hood (talk) 22:51, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
Vindolwae's lines after Keeper of the Fate treated like vandalismEdit
When I add in a specific updated line for Vindolwae, it is registered as vandalism. I think the words d e a d and h u n t s is why it cannot be added in. Here is the original line but I have to will to space it so it doesn't get censored.
- "Next thing that'll happen is that every word in this city of the d e a d comes to life and h u n t s every mortal down. That'd be fun.
No, it wouldn't be fun. If you think it'd be fun, please venture elsewhere."

Being able to edit Prince Naemon's page to include updated variation line.Edit
I started playing a new Aldmeri Dominion character to update lines for character dialogue. I wanted to include an additional variation of text in one of Prince Naemon's dialogue during In the Name of the Queen, but unable to due to the article being locked. In particular this is the part when you ask Who are these people?
The proposed change would look like this:
- Who are these people? / Who are all these people here?

- Okay, I've unblocked the page, so go ahead and edit it. It was a vandalism target a few years ago, so if it still is, I'll re-block it after you're done. – Robin Hood (talk) 03:11, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
fanfic submission reported as bulk spamEdit
Hi, sorry to bother you,
I stumbled across the fanfiction section of this wiki yesterday and wanted to cross-post a fic I'm writing and also posting elsewhere, but I can't create a new page for it (even to add one chapter) because it's automatically marked under Bulk Spam. I suspect that's because I had to make an account to submit it, so posting that much is not an allowed action so early? I've been trawling this wiki for a few months and have made some small edits just using my IP, so it's marked on my profile that I've been here for longer than the account has existed for.
Anything I can do about this? Anything you can help with? Or should I just wait it out?

- That would normally go away after at least 10 edits and 4 days of activity, but I've overridden it. Try again and let me know if you have any issues. It'll probably still throw a warning at you or maybe a captcha, but it should let you through after you acknowledge those. – Robin Hood (talk) 15:37, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Yet another Beyond Skyrim template request...Edit
Hi Rob! Another quick one from me regarding templates and Beyond Skyrim pages. For the County Bruma page I'd like the Place Summary template to display a modified set of the info we present on Hold pages (e.g. Eastmarch). The only "new" parameters would be |count
to substitute for |jarl
and a generic |steward
since Cyrodiil only has one "government" for each city. Everything else should be the same (insofar as I've filled in the parameters atm). You'll see from the County page however that the only thing the template is currently picking up is the location parameter. Would you be able to take a look when you have a moment and see if that's fixable? Thank you very much! --SerCenKing (talk) 21:52, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
- I think that should do it. Let me know if I missed anything or you want to change anything. Or, if you want to do it yourself, the county-specific page can be found here. – Robin Hood (talk) 02:49, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Amazing, thank you very much! I made a small change to the links which doesn't seem to have broken anything thus far :) --SerCenKing (talk) 12:04, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Possible merging of recommended ESO character pagesEdit
I noticed Sergeant Dagla has a page merge recommendation with another page called Dagla. After playing with an Aldmeri Dominion toon, I noticed both characters are the virtually the same in both appearance and voice. Is it possible to merge those 2 pages together?
Also, I think the Andoriel (Woodhearth) and the Andoriel (Seaside Sanctuary) pages should be merged as well since I suspected they're the same character as Andoriel in Woodhearth is a female Bosmer diguised as an Altmer during the quest Veil Illusion.

- I'm not in a position to decide, myself, since I don't play the game anymore. I'd suggest posting on each of their talk pages, or maybe the Community Portal, and see if other ESO players have any thoughts on the matter. – Robin Hood (talk) 06:16, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
View On MapEdit
Hello Robinhood,
I have a question about getting a (View on Map) to work for the Leyawiin Outlaws Refuge. Each time you click on the (View on Map) it comes up "That location doesn't exsist". I added the WikiPage link to each entrance but still no exsistence. I have also looked at other pages with a (View on Map) link on the editing side to try and see a difference between the pages, but I dont want to edit anything since I AM NOT that good at editing and dont want to inadvertently delete a page. I would like a more of a know how to correct it. Your help would be appreciated. Robert C Thomas 17:03, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- That's got me stumped as well. The only thing I can think of is maybe because there are two, the map doesn't want to arbitrarily pick one. I've asked the developer of the map code and we'll see what he says. If you're on Discord, you can find the message here. If not, let me know and I'll reply here as soon as I hear back from him. – Robin Hood (talk) 17:26, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

- We just figured it out: there was a space before the name in the map data. Removing that, the link now works as expected. – Robin Hood (talk) 17:50, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
Can't access to Files serverEdit
Hi Robin,
I'm in charge of DaggerfallSetup, PFD and DFTools, and I deposit the files on your server since many years. Last time was in February 2024 to deposit the new DaggerfallSetup and PFDSetup. One week ago I tried to connect to folder /Fichiers as I always did with FileZilla, but FileZilla indicates that the connexion times out after 20 seconds and that to retrieve directory listing is impossible. Same today. Did something changed since February 2024? --Daneel53 (talk) 09:16, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- Where are you depositing files exactly? I'm not aware of any system we have to upload files. -- Daveh (talk) 14:31, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

- If you look to the link of DaggerfallSetup for example, you will see that the file is into https://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/Fichiers/. This is the place where I store my files since 2017 and other than me before...--Daneel53 (talk) 15:38, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

- That would be a change on wiwiland's end, then. You'd have to get in touch with them. – Robin Hood (talk) 15:40, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

I think you broke Template:TrailEdit
The template just has red links in it now. 67.163.114.70 18:18, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Gah! I fixed the problem I was trying to fix, but I guess I broke other stuff. I'll back out the change. Thanks! – Robin Hood (talk) 18:19, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Shiny StarEdit
You have been given a shiny gold star! Hey, RobinHood! It doesn't look like you have received one of these in quite awhile, so I wanted to let you know I appreciate all the help with templates and server requests lately, not to mention going back years. Thank you! —Dillonn241 (talk) 03:21, 12 August 2024 (UTC) |
- Awww, thank you! I really appreciate it. – Robin Hood (talk) 04:35, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
