WelcomeEdit
Hello Daric Gaersmith! Welcome to UESPWiki. It's always good to have new members. If you would like to help improve any of our pages, you may want to take a look at the following links:
- Policies and Guidelines: UESPWiki standards and expectations
- Help Contents: a list of in-depth Help pages
- Quick Editing Guide: a quick guide to wiki markup
- Getting Started: how you can help
If you would like to spice up your userpage, click here for a list of userboxes you can use, including a guide to making your own.
When you're editing, it's always a good idea to leave edit summaries to explain the changes you have made to a particular page, and remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~. Also, the "show preview" button is a great way to view the changes you've made so far without actually saving the page (our patrollers really appreciate it!).
Feel free to practice editing in the sandbox or discuss the games in the forums. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact one of our mentors. Have fun! —Snowmane(talk•email) 06:28, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
Spam filterEdit
I am not an expert on the thing, so don't quote me on anything I say, but I think the issue is how you're formatting your links... As external links rather than internal links. Using the link to User:Rpeh as an example, you are formatting it [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/User:Rpeh like this], but you can create inter-wiki links like this by formatting it [[User:Rpeh|like this]], which the filter avoids. If you need help with anything, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page or contact a different mentor and someone will help you out. :) Snowmane(talk•email) 07:31, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
- Thanks for that. I used the external link originally because adding the internal link seemed to transclude a whole heap of the user's userpage into my page, which is not what I wanted at all. Daric Gaersmith (talk) 08:06, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
Oh, and now that I glanced over your latest edits, the spam filter is doing the job it's designed to do. We have a spambot issue, so those filters are set up to hate when new users try linking off site to stuff, which is why it asks for verification to post the links. Eventually, that will stop I think, after... Whatever the criteria is to stop it (like I said, don't quote me :p) Snowmane(talk•email) 07:31, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
- I thought that might be the case. I guess I should start with small edits, as you would on a content page. I'm surprised that major edits of a userpage are frowned upon by the spambot. Thanks for the advice. Here is the error message I have been getting, when trying to make large edits to my userpage. Daric Gaersmith (talk) 08:06, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
-
- I see exactly what's going on. The first edit you made added a link to
live.xbox.com
, whereas the filter only lets throughwww.xbox.com
. Due to the crappy way that it detects it (which unfortunately I can't fix), it registered it as an added link every edit, which is why you kept getting the error message. One edit you made added links towww.gimp.org
andqgis.org
, which would register as spam links, because neither of them are on the whitelist. As for it complaining about you doing this on your userpage, 99% of spam edits are done to a spammer's own User page or User Talk page, thus the filter checks edits to those places. - After you've been on the site for 4 days and have made 10 edits, you'll be allowed to post as many links as you want (within reason, of course!). This mechanism is able to deter the vast majority of spammers, because few of them wait 4 days, and none of them make 10 edits before spamming. • JAT 08:43, 15 December 2012 (GMT)
- Ah, thanks for that. I'm here for the long haul, and I look forward to losing the training wheels. Haha. Daric Gaersmith (talk) 08:51, 15 December 2012 (GMT)

New Dragonborn Quest PageEdit
Hiya Daric Gaersmith! I noticed your sandbox here and wanted to let you know that the quest page has been set up here. Feel free to copy the information from your sandbox over to the quest page any time. :) — ABCface◥ 22:59, 17 December 2012 (GMT)
- Hi Alphabetface, thanks for the "thumbs up" for my first new content page. I'm enjoying playing through Dragonborn for the first time, and I will definitely come back here and add more pages and edits from my second play-through. Daric Gaersmith (talk) 00:59, 18 December 2012 (GMT)
- Not a problem! In fact, seeing your sandbox was what led me to poking RH to get his bot to set up that and a few other missing quest pages. It was well-written and looks good; I just took out a few redundant links (generally one link per section is fine). Keep up the good work. :) — ABCface◥ 02:07, 18 December 2012 (GMT)
- Great, thanks for that ABCface and RH. I have compared the revisions you both made, and it was interesting to see what you had done to improve the page. That category tag was also on the Dragonborn:Experimental_Subject quest page, which I originally copied from to create my new content page. I guess the templates are being constantly improved, and content that was once entered manually (such as that category tag, I assume) can now be transcluded instead. – Daric↝talk 11:20, 18 December 2012 (GMT)

- Actually, the Experimental Subject quest page is a somewhat unique case in that it's actually two separate quests which are similar but with the same name in game data, so we chose to combine them into one quest page on the wiki for now. Most quests are only considered side quests or only considered miscellaneous quests, but the two quests which were combined into that page were different types. So in that case the category which is automatically added is Category:Dragonborn-Quests-Side Quests (added by the trail for side quests). Category:Dragonborn-Quests-Miscellaneous had to be manually added because the trail only accounts for one of those categories. So it turns out you just picked a "special case" as your example for copying the quest page formatting. :) — ABCface◥ 13:53, 18 December 2012 (GMT)

CSListEdit
I'm starting to learn about CSList, thanks to The Silencer linking me to it in this discussion. What I am wondering currently is whether the Dragonborn data has yet been added? I tried to do a search for Neloth in the CSList, using the RefID 0x000177DA, but it came back as the Imperial banner in Helgen Keep. I then searched the CSList to find Alvor using the RefID 0x00013482, which returned the results for Alvor as expected. I can only assume that, either the RefID on the Neloth page is incorrect, or the Dragonborn data has not yet been added to CSList. Any ideas anyone?
- Neither Hearthfire or Dragonborn's data has been uploaded. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 13:54, 23 December 2012 (GMT)
- Thanks for the reply. I look forward to getting my head around the data structure of the TES games. Many decades ago I used to use hex editors to decode raw game data to make my own mods and cheats. It is interesting to see how the latest games store their data.
- While you may see some stuff for it appearing soonish, it's likely to be very piecemeal unless the creator of CSList returns. I'm developing replacement code when I have the chance, but it'll definitely take some time before we see full updates. The game data is just massive when you're coming at it for the first time ever (as opposed to having built up a code base from Morrowind onwards, as many have done), and I only get so much time per day to work on it. :) – Robin Hood TALK 03:34, 24 December 2012 (GMT)

AdviceEdit
Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki; however, you seem to have been making multiple edits to a page by not using the show preview button, clogging up the Recent Changes in the process. We appreciate your enthusiasm, but keep in mind that each edit needs to be patrolled, so multiple consecutive edits create an unnecessary hassle on those who patrol. So please utilize this feature! You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. —ThuumofReason (talk) 13:58, 9 January 2013 (GMT)
- Thanks for the advice. I apologize for all the edits. I do make extensive use of the show preview button, however when I am editing my custom templates I need to save the changes to the template before a refresh of the page that references the template will update properly. As I am building a whole new custom template I hope that the spate of minor tweaks and edits should subside soon, and the template will help to reduce the amount of manual edits I do within my user space in the future. Again, sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime. – Daric↝talk 14:04, 9 January 2013 (GMT)
- No problem! Just wanted to make sure. :-) ThuumofReason (talk) 14:04, 9 January 2013 (GMT)
- Another option to explore is the {{#preview}} function, which lets you see what a template would look like if you called it with certain values. Say, for example, you want to preview the template with the first unnamed parameter equal to "test", you'd use:
{{#preview:1|test}}
. You can read more about it at Project:MetaTemplate.- That is a great tool, thanks for that. I can set up a sandbox with the {{#preview}} code in it, then just keep refreshing that, without having to save the sandbox. I'll use that from now on. Thanks! – Daric↝talk 04:03, 10 January 2013 (GMT)
- I have just had a look at {{#preview}} and it doesn't appear to do what I thought it would. From what I understand, this only allows me to pass variables to a saved template, to see what the page would look like with those variables when the template is applied. That won't reduce the effort (or number of saves clogging the Recent Changes page) when I want to edit the underlying template itself. I don't see the point of {{#preview}} when developing a template. It only seems useful when developing a page that relies on a template. – Daric↝talk 04:20, 10 January 2013 (GMT)
- I can see where the wording might be confusing, but I can't think of a better way to word it. Basically, if your template looks like this:
{{#preview:test|Hello World}}{{{test|}}}
...then the output when you use Show preview would be "Hello World". If you don't think/want to remove the #preview before saving the template, however, then it won't do anything when the template is actually called. The one real trick here is that you have to be in Template space for #preview to work. Sorry for not mentioning that part earlier, I was forgetting. Usually if you're designing something for your User page, you'd just play around in Template:Sandbox, using only Show preview while you test, then copy it back to User space when you're reasonably sure it works how you want it to. – Robin Hood (talk) 09:27, 10 January 2013 (GMT)- I probably should make use of Template:Sandbox, you're right. I'll check that out. Thanks. – Daric↝talk 09:33, 10 January 2013 (GMT)

- For your #if edit, you had the right idea, but the wiki software has difficulty figuring out when you mean a | to separate the table cells/rows and when you mean it to separate the #if sections. Within a #if, you have to use {{!}} every time you want a | in a table. Most other things, like templates and links, the syntax stays normal, though. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. IRC is a great place to get a quick answer. It's rare that one of the site's templaters isn't in there. – Robin Hood (talk) 21:43, 9 January 2013 (GMT)
- Thanks for the feedback. I figured it was a conflict between the vertical bars of the {{if}} and the vertical bars of the table, but I didn't know how to overcome it. What I was trying to achieve is a conditional section within a table, so that the details of the death of the character only show up if the character is actually dead. I'll look into your suggestion at some time and see if I can get it working properly, but its not a high priority. Maybe on my next revision of my pages. For now I'm just after the basic functionality. – Daric↝talk 04:03, 10 January 2013 (GMT)

Link moveEdit
I've moved the image to the standard naming conventions as requested, and I've updated one of the links for you, but the rest seem to be hidden in one of your fancy templates somewhere, and I am not a template guy, so I'll just leave those last two links to you to update. You can see what pages the old file links to here. Oh, and one last thing, when you're done moving your links, put {{Speed|Redirect after page move}} on :File:Idea 32x32.png and an administrator will take care of deleting it. --Snowmane(talk•email) 10:42, 11 January 2013 (GMT)
- Thanks for your help. I have done as suggested, and in future I'll remember to name images properly. I did read Help:Images, but must have missed that part about naming conventions for images that are only used on user pages. – Daric↝talk 11:09, 11 January 2013 (GMT)
Deletion RequestEdit
Hi Daric! I was about to delete User:Daric Gaersmith/Templates/Person/Header when I noticed that User:Daric Gaersmith/Templates/Person/Header still redirects to it. Did you want to get rid of that page as well, or were you planning to use it for something else? Just let me know! ⇠eshetalk 14:33, 11 January 2013 (GMT)
- Thanks for the heads-up on this. Yes, I have finished with both User:Daric Gaersmith/Templates/Person/Header and User:Daric Gaersmith/Templates/People/Header, they can both be deleted. I had tried to implement {{NPC_Summary}} and {{NPC_Summary/Skyrim_Header}}, but it just got too confusing, so I decided to create my own InfoBox from scratch instead. – Daric↝talk 01:14, 12 January 2013 (GMT)
Tamriel RebuiltEdit
Was poking around your cartography project, and it occurred to me you might be interested in some of the work that's already been done in this respect by the Tamriel Rebuilt people, particular as pertains to mainland Morrowind. It's not 100% canon, but they've done their homework as far as getting things as accurate to lore as possible, so you might want to take a look at it to see how it fits in with your own work. TheRealLurlock (talk) 04:30, 23 January 2013 (GMT)
- Thanks for that. I have come across TR already and had a look, as much as I can anyway. I'm an Xbox gamer, and do not own any Elder Scrolls titles for the PC as yet. I understand that TR requires that you have a license for Morrowind first, just like any other mod. I like what they are doing over at TR, and it looks great. – Daric↝talk 07:41, 23 January 2013 (GMT)
WatchlistEdit
Hiya Daric! I noticed you made an edit to the talk page for Template:Editing Allowed saying you'd added it to your talk page in case anyone had questions, then deleted the edit. Just so you know, I've marked the page for deletion since we don't keep empty talk pages around. However, when you put the page itself on your watchlist, the talk page is automatically added. So as long as you have the page itself on your watchlist, you will still get notified if/when someone posts to the talk page. — ABCface◥ 16:56, 25 January 2013 (GMT)
- Okay, thanks for that. I wasn't too sure how that worked, but now I know. Thanks for your help. – Daric↝talk 00:27, 26 January 2013 (GMT)
Display TitleEdit
{{DISPLAYTITLE:<span style="display:none">User:Daric Gaersmith/TES Fan Fiction Collection/Gaersmith Legacy/Reference Material/People/</span>Rerlas Gaersmith}}
I was bored and playing with Display Title, and I remembered you mentioning here wanting to cut down the length of the titles of your pages on the pages themselves. Use the code like that, modifying the code appropriately for each page. You can see it in action here. You need to include the last / after "People", using that code I tweaked to yours, for example, but you can cut it down to displaying just "Rerlas Gaersmith" Or even "People/Rerlas Gaersmith", sliding back how much is displayed to whatever your preference would be.
I figured that would be something that would interest you. Take care. :) Snowmane(talk•email) 00:52, 27 January 2013 (GMT)

- I don't think you truly understand just how much this had helped me! I was having to add a level 1 heading to all of my pages, with the shortened name of the page, and all subsequent headings were lower than that, meaning that I couldn't use level 1 headings for anything else. Now I can go ahead and use your suggested change, and modify all my section headings on my pages. You, my friend, are awesome! – Daric↝talk 00:59, 27 January 2013 (GMT)
Regarding Your MessageEdit
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. This -was- originally my account, but my young cousin wanted it so he could post that story onto the wiki, as he didn't have an email, etc etc, so I just let him have it, and haven't been back to it since. Only recently, when he started asking me for the password because he wanted to continue it again, did I log back on. I also, thank you for the message you sent me, as I am not good with wikis at all, and believe that it will probably be of help to me as -I- actually start writing things. -TOG42
- Happy to help. Don't forget that you can sign your message quickly and automatically using ~~~~ which makes it easier for people to find you on the wiki, as it adds a link to your userpage and tags your message with the time and date that it was posted. All the best, – Daric↝talk 05:46, 4 February 2013 (GMT)
Shadowmark questionEdit
Ran into a problem over this last holiday (chinese new year, live in china so yeah..). Everytime I try to edit a shadowmark from uesp to change the color and have a transparent background in photoshop it defaults to the white background when I save it. I assume it's a setting of some sort that I'm overlooking. Do you use photoshop and if so, any idea what that setting is? I tried to search for it, unfortunately most of the sites that appear to have the information are blocked in china. If you have any suggestions I'd appreciate them. MB52TK 00:34, 16 February 2013 (GMT)
- Sorry, I use GIMP, not Photoshop. It might have something to do with the file format that you are using when you save. You cannot save a transparent background into a JPEG file, it would need to be a GIF, PNG, or similar. – Daric↝talk 05:36, 16 February 2013 (GMT)
- Yup, that was the problem. Should have checked to see what the original file format was for the shadowmarks. Homer Simpson moment, thanks for the info. Now to make me some silver shadowmarks. Silver seems to be the best choice as that's the color used in game. At least all the shadowmarks I've seen so far. MB52TK 07:54, 16 February 2013 (GMT)

As far as color goes, yellow should do it. I was trying to get silver but after a bit I thought that maybe it wouldn't be as apparent as yellow. If you'd be willing to help I'd be grateful. MB52TK 05:15, 28 February 2013 (GMT)
Easier UserboxesEdit
Just FYI, most of the userboxes support a text
parameter which will let you significantly shorten a lot of your custom userboxes. For example:
This user plays on the Xbox, but only because someone gave him one for free. |
– Robin Hood (talk) 06:47, 9 March 2013 (GMT)
- Thanks for that RH. I had a look at the template before I went ahead and made a custom one. Unfortunately, I only tried to add a
|info=
instead of a|text=
parameter. No wonder it didn't work for me, and I ended up making a custom one. I'll fix it next time I edit the page. – Daric↝talk 10:52, 9 March 2013 (GMT)
Geode locationsEdit
Hi, Daric~ I've added detailed locations of geodes to the page. At this moment, just two Emerald Geodes left. I will keep working on it. If you get any ideas, please let me know. I'm willing to help. Dreamshadow (talk) 06:26, 29 March 2013 (GMT)
- Hey there Dreamshadow. As you may have seen in the CP discussion, I haven't had anything to do with that project lately. To be honest, I didn't even know that the Dragonborn:Mining page existed, until you linked me to it just now. — Daric✐ 07:32, 29 March 2013 (GMT)
- Well, don't worry now :) I've found all the detailed locations we need, including the last one. Things aren't that hard. Simply use a map, each kind of geode tend to locate in the same region. Give me five! Dreamshadow (talk) 07:59, 29 March 2013 (GMT)
- Congrats matey. I seem to recall finding a couple of different types of geode in close proximity to each other somewhere. Can't remember where that was though. So your finding that "...each kind of geode tend to locate in the same region", is interesting. A map would be good, colour-coded, showing the population density and spread of the various geodes across Solstheim. My {{Perk Tree}} fu is strong now, and I probably could make such a map, given that the data is available. I might just have a look at doing this. We can work on it together if you like. — Daric✐ 09:33, 29 March 2013 (GMT)
- Sounds good~ I've got a map of Solstheim. Give me some time and I can work out such a map with my Photoshop. Just a minor problem, I don't remember where I got this map(the file name is TES5_klarix_Dragonborn_Solstheim_Map.jpg), will it lead to any copyright problems? I'm not quite sure. Dreamshadow (talk) 10:45, 29 March 2013 (GMT)
- Yeah, I know the map of which you speak. It compares the locations from Solstheim of 3E 427 with how it appears in Dragonborn of 4E 201, bearing the mark 180° above the label for Hrothmund's Barrow, if I recall correctly. Best not to upload it to UESP, as it may indeed cause licensing issues. I've been looking at Alfwyn's sandbox as an example. There currently is no background image in it, but the locations are clearly identifiable if you compare them to Klarix's map. I assume Alf plans to put a background in there behind all those image marks, so we'll keep an eye on how that project progresses, and maybe we can copy some of Alf's sand into one of our own sandboxes, then add image marks for the geodes to it. — Daric✐ 11:09, 29 March 2013 (GMT)
