Detailed WalkthroughEdit
You'll find Sergeant Rhorlak standing in the camp at the edge of the Starved Plain, west of Davon's Watch Wayshrine. Talk to him, and he'll tell you that he has a problem in his hands. An army of ghosts has appeared in the battlefield between Pact and Covenant troops and killed the enemy forces, but are now a threat to his troops as well. His two mages, Furon and Reesa, can't agree on how to best handle the situation. Rhorlak wants you to give both their ideas a try, then decide which one is better and let him know.
The first mage you get to talk to is Furon, whom you'll find standing next to Rhorlak. He wonders why the ghosts chose this particular day to appear, and explains that they are the remnants of an ancient army of Chimer warriors. He explains that the plan to deal with the ghosts came from his brother, Giron, and involves controlling the dead, turning them into a defensive force for Davon's Watch. He asks that you test his method before a large scale ritual is attempted. He'll give you a Smoky Pendant to use on one of the ancient dead to try and bind it. He warns you that you'll have to weaken the ghost a bit before attempting to use the pendant, and tells you to bring the ghost back to him if the ritual works.
Go past the broken-down wall to the south and defeat one of the spirits. Once you reduce it's health to zero, it will cower down in front of you and allow you to use the pendant on it. You can then lead the ghost back to Furon, who will congratulate you on a job well done, and notes that this proves the ghosts can be forced to guard Davon's Watch from further assaults.
When you finish speaking with Furon, Reesa, who is standing on the opposite side of the campfire, will ask you to have a word with her. She claims that the Rii brothers plan is wrong, because the dead should not be enslaved, but Furon doesn't understand this and Giron doesn't seem to care. She suggests a better way for dealing with the ghosts, and gives you an Argonian Talisman that she asks you to use to free a ghost. Again, the ghost will try to cling to this world, so weakening it is necessary before using the talisman. She tells you to return to her once a ghost is freed.
Again, head past the wall and defeat a spirit, then use the talisman on it when it cowers. The ghost will express their gratitude and depart. Return to Reesa and she says she can feel that the talisman has been used. When you tell her the spirit seemed grateful to be free, she replies that spirits aren't meant to be trapped and doing so is the equivalent of torturing them.
After you're done with Reesa, go and talk to Rhorlak again. He will say that he needs a solution, and asks what your decision is. At this point you have a choice to make: will you follow Furon's or Reesa's plan?
Furon's PlanEdit
If you chose Furon's plan, Rhorlak says that the brothers are smart and their idea is sound, and asks you to talk to Giron. Giron will be glad that you understand the wisdom of his plan, and asks you to go find the bones of the Chimer general, Radrathren, and his captains, Andrana and Rysari. According to him, you can use their skulls to control the leaders, which will allow you to take control of the ghost army. While you go get the skulls, Giron and Furon will prepare for the ritual in a nearby Daedric ruin. Giron asks you to find them there once you have the skulls.
You will find General Radrathren's Skull in the western part of the Starved Plains, Captain Adrana's Skull near the middle and Captain Rysari's Skull in the eastern part of the Plains. Each gravesite appears as an Unearthed Burial Mound that can be looted for the respective leader's skull. When you loot each skull, the ghost of Radrathren appears briefly to threaten you. Once you have gathered all three skulls, make your way to the Daedric temple at the top of the hill in the southwestern part of the Plains. Furon greets you in the middle of the ruins next to an unlit brazier. Place the skulls into it, and it lights with a blue fire, summoning the ghost of General Radrathren to fight you. Kill him, and talk to Furon, who is horrified by the pain the ritual caused to the ghost. Confirm to him that the ritual is finished, and he will lament that it wasn't supposed to be like this, but will nevertheless reward you with Rhorlak's War Axe and a moderate amount of gold, completing the quest. He will then offer you the follow-up quest Wayward Son.
Reesa's PlanEdit
If you chose Reesa's plan, Rhorlak will admit that maybe enslaving the dead is not the best idea, and even though Reesa sees the world differently, she's seldom wrong. He asks you to talk to her to hear the rest. When spoken to, Reesa will be glad you made the right decision and tells you that the way to free the ghost army is through freeing their commanders. She directs you to search for relics that belonged to the Chimer general and his captains, saying that they are the key to wresting their attention from the past. After you find the relics, she asks you to meet her at a nearby Daedric ruin, which is the perfect spot to perform her ritual.
You will find General Radrathren's Necklace in the western part of the Starved Plains, Captain Andrana's Sacred Dagger near the middle and Captain Rysari's Charm in the eastern part of the Plains. Each relic site appears as an Unearthed Burial Mound that can be looted for the respective leader's relic. When you loot each relic, the ghost of Radrathren appears briefly to threaten you. Once you have gathered all three relics, make your way to the Daedric temple at the top of the hill in the southwestern part of the Plains. Reesa greets you in the middle of the ruins next to an unlit brazier. Place the relics into it, and it lights with a blue fire, summoning the ghost of General Radrathren to fight you. Kill him, and talk to Reesa, who will confirm that the ghost leaders have moved on, and that their army is no longer a threat and will soon follow them. She will reward you with Rhorlak's War Axe and a moderate amount of gold, completing the quest, and offer you the follow-up quest Giving for the Greater Good.
NotesEdit
- Regardless of which plan you follow, the ghosts will stay in the field of battle indefinately. They will, however, become nonhostile towards you once the quest is complete.
