Sabre Cats, also known as Sabertooths[1]:120 or Rhojiit, are large cats that primarily inhabit Skyrim, but have also been found in parts of Cyrodiil, Hammerfell, and High Rock.[2] They are powerful and fast predators that evolved two distinctive and dangerous sharp front teeth.[3] They are very dangerous and will attack wildlife and people without hesitation, often ignoring the former in favor of the latter.[4] They are known to carry the disease Witbane.
According to a Khajiit story recorded by Sonia Vette, who overheard the story being told to a child, sabre cats were originally Khajiiti warriors in the Pride of Alkosh. They were called to Skyrim by Alkosh, but their devotion would earn them the ire of Lorkhaj, who would share a "roar" with Ra'Wulfharth to change the moon phases of Masser and Secunda. Ra'Wulfharth used this ability to change the Khajiit warriors into the Senche furstock, a very large quadruped form of Khajiit, and Lorkhaj "stripped from them all reason". Overtime these Rhojiit "grew small and lost their cunning altogether", resulting in the modern sabre cats that roam the land today.[5]
Many variants of sabre cat documented during the Second Era shared physical similarities with known forms of Senche-Cat, with the addition of the distinctive sabre teeth.[6][7] Like Khajiit,[8] they are considered cousins of Senche-Cats.[9]
There are many recorded instances of successfully tamed sabre cats, often as mounts, although the vast majority of sabre cat are wild.[2] The cute appearance of their cubs have resulted in a few being taken in as pets, although they are noted to be dangerous even in their youth.[10][11] Sabre cats are also captured and left in their wild state, to act as a form of entertainment by pitting them against other animals or people in combat.[12][13]
Teeth from sabre cats have been harvested for alchemical purposes, as well as their eyes.[14][15] Their pelts are used in various applications ranging from decoration to leatherworking.[16] However, the author Aldetuile discourages consumption of their meat, as it is "tasteless and not fit to eat".[3]
Sabre cats have some association with Kyne. Facing a guardian spirit in the form of a sabre cat is one part of the goddess's sacred trials.[17] Bards have claimed that the Vale Sabre Cat variant's glowing fur was a blessing granted to them by Kyne. However scholars in the College of Sapiarchs refute this.[18]
