The Ilessan Hills is a political entity found in the province of High Rock, in the region of the Iliac Bay. It is a landlocked region known for its ancient pine forests.[1][2] It mostly consists of a vast mountain range that spills into neighboring countries and the wetlands in the northeast section of the barony.[3] The region is the home of the local Glenmoril Wyrd, an ancient coven of witches that worship the natural world and the less-feral aspects of Hircine.[4]

HistoryEdit

Rumors of the Glenmoril Wyrd living in the forest have existed since before recorded history[5] (which started roughly around High King Harald's reign over Skyrim).[6] They live in a place called the Gloomy Cave, far from the most rudimentary goat trails in the wilderness[5] near Old Chrystausa's Place in east-central Ilessan Hills.[7] The wyrd have had a long, conflicting history with the Reach Clans that goes back thousands of years, relative to 2E 582.[4]

For the longest time, the Bretons of High Rock have lived in the region.[8] Other races and factions also live in the Ilessan Hills, such as barbarians, giants and the orcs, who live in strongholds.[9] The Haarvenu are the most dominant vampire bloodline in the region.[8] In her adventures across Tamriel, Princess Ayrenn of the Summerset Isles supposedly danced with the Nereids of the Ilessan Hills.[10]

By 3E 405, the Barony of Ilessan Hills was ruled by an unnamed Baron and its patron deity was Arkay, who is represented through the Order of Arkay. Many cities dotted the region's landscape, including the capital of the same name, Aldhead Rock, Baelwall, Baelway, Blackley, Blackworth, Burgham, Charbeth, Croming, Crossfort, Crossham, Deerway, Kirkvale, Gallotower, Galloworth, Gothwood, Graygate Hollow, Holmont, Holway, Ipstry, Kirkbrone, Longbeth, Newbrone, Newmarket, and Westfield Moor. The region was neighbored by several nations, including Daenia to the east, Daggerfall to the south, Glenpoint to the west, Northmoor to the northwest, Shalgora to the southeast, and Ykalon to the northeast.[8]

On the 9th of Frostfall, in 3E 417, the kingdoms of the Iliac Bay were enraptured in warfare and destruction occurred across the region. A great fire broke out between the Ilessan Hills and Daenia, spreading further north into Phrygias and Ykalon, to as far as the Wrothgarian Mountain foothills. By the 11th, the Iliac Bay changed from several, disparate nations merged into the four major kingdoms. Ilessan Hills were absorbed by the Kingdom of Daggerfall, at the time ruled by King Gothryd.[11] Like other conquered territories, Ilessan Hills was able to retain its original name but is sometimes referred to as Daggerfallian Ilessan Hills.[UOL 1]

The Ilessan Hills (also called Ilessen Hills)[12] is the walled capital of the eponymous barony, in the midst of the mountain range right next to the border toward Glenpoint.[8]

During the late Third Era, the town of Ilessen Hills was an active settlement. It was ruled by Baron Andywyr and had a rivalry with Kings Guard. Ilessen Hills is neighbored by several settlements, such as Ebon Wastes to the north and Glenpoint to the south.[13]

NotesEdit

  • There is a ruined tower called the Ilessan Tower outside of Daggerfall that may have been used in the city's defense. It is unknown how it is connected to the region if it is at all.[14]
