Daenia is a region located in west-central High Rock, in the greater Iliac Bay region of northwest Tamriel.[2] Daenia is mostly comprised of woodland and it is the home of the Beldama Coven, an ancient gathering of wyrd that worship Jephre the Singer. They gather in the north-central part of the region, near Greenham Manor.[3][4]
HistoryEdit
When the Duchy of Daenia was founded is unknown, but the name is associated with the western region of Glenumbra, where the city of Daggerfall is located and where the Beldama Wyrd lived for years.[5] Beyond the Bretons that make up the primary population of the region, there are other races and even subcultures that live in Daenia.[2] Barbarians live in strongholds across the land, and minor races like the Giants of Gromgon and the Orcs also live in fortresses.[6] The Thrafey clan of Vampires are the most prominent bloodline in the region.[2]
Sometime in the Third Era, one of the region's most infamous citizens was a Breton writer named Darius Shano. In the early years of his career, he garnered wide success for his horrifying yet fascinating writing directly inspired by the nightmares conjured by the Daedric Prince, Vaermina. When these nightmares stopped, his audience slowly waned and as a means to re-capture his success, he targeted many public figures. At the age of thirty-nine, he wrote his final piece, the Noblest Fool, which ridiculed Tiber Septim's inclusion into the Nine Divines pantheon. The King of Daenia demanded Shano's death and he was executed in front of a cheering crowd of hundreds. In the end, he was the subject of a wager between Vaermina and Sheogorath, in which the latter was victorious.[7]
By 3E 405, the Duchy of Daenia was ruled by an unknown Duchess and its patron deity was Julianos, who is represented through the School of Julianos. Many cities dotted the region's landscape, including the capital of the same name, Grayborne Court, Midmoth, Penpath, and Westtry. The region was neighbored by several nations, including the Anticlere to the south, Ilessan Hills to the west, Shalgora to the southwest, Urvaius to the east, and Ykalon to the north.[2]
On the 9th of Frostfall, in 3E 417, the kingdoms of the Iliac Bay warred for complete control of the region, and many of the smaller regions were caught in the crossfire. A forest fire mustered in Daenia and Ilessan Hills' forest before it spread further north into Phrygias and Ykalon. The events were documented by an undercover Blades agent known as the Graylady and later compiled with other reports about the Warp in the West. After the widespread destruction, nations across the Iliac Bay were annexed into the three main kingdoms of the region. Daenia was absorbed into the Kingdom of Daggerfall, which now encompassed everything from the west coast to the western half of Anticlere.[8]
Like other conquered territories, Daenia was able to retain its original name but is sometimes referred to as Daggerfallian Daenia.[UOL 1] Despite the kingdoms coming to terms with each other through diplomacy, minor border wars took place between Daggerfall and Wayrest. Although Daenia largely falls under the former, its eastern border is shared with the latter.[9]
