Ash Vampires also known as Heartwights are very powerful ash creatures created by the connection forged by Dagoth Ur to the power of Heart of Lorkhan. Considered to be distinct from actual "vampires" themselves. The terms "Ash Vampire", and "Blood Vampire" are used to distinguish between the two kinds of vampires. In addition, these creatures are not actually undead, and it isn't possible to catch vampirism from them.[1][2][3] Despite this, many on Vvardenfell considered them as a powerful form of undead.[3]
There were only seven known Ash Vampires, they were considered brothers to Dagoth Ur and were chief among his servants, described as powerful and cunning sorcerers of old.[4][5] Similar in appearance to Dagoth Ur himself, possessing sharp claws and a third eye, they served as the nobility of House Dagoth.[6] They were known to have slept alongside Dagoth Ur under Red Mountain for thousands of years.[7] Dagoth Ur was able to give portions of his power and immortality to these few individuals of his original House.[4][7] As such when they appeared to die, they would eventually be revived at the Heart.[4][8] Dagoth Ur's plan for his brethern was for them to be established as the god-priests of Akulakhan.[9]
All seven of the Ash Vampires were slain by the Nerevarine.[4]
