Template talk:Online Furnishing Summary

Summoned CollectiblesEdit

I'd like to bring this up here instead of Discord for posterity. I think we should add the furnishing summaries for collectibles that are used outside of housing (such as Mounts, Pets, and Assistants) to a section on the Collectibles' pages.

For example, on a Mount page, you'd have the Collectible summary at the top of the page, some intermediate information, and perhaps the Furnishing Summary at the very bottom. The Furnishing Summary contains information that some people might want to look at for these collectibles, sure. However, the furnishing summary contains a lot of the same information we already put in the Collectible Summary, and information about the collectible item (as opposed to the furnishing) is what people are most likely going to come to Collectible pages to see. The Furnishing Summary primarily contains technical information for our furniture lists, so I feel placing it at the bottom of Collections pages would be a decent way of handling this issue.

I thought about this while perusing the new page for Online:Factotum Property Steward, which, at the time of writing, contains a Furnishing summary and no NPC or Collectible data. The new Factotum assistants are unique in that their Furnishing name and NPC name are identical. For most Assistants, the actual NPC's name is different from that of the collectible. See: Tythis Andromo vs Tythis Andromo, the Banker. The version without "the Banker" in its name is the NPC that shows up when the collectible is used in Tamriel or when placed in a house, and the one with "the Banker" is the name of the collectible.

I can't remember if there's anything else I wanted to mention, but I think the issue has been laid out in enough detail to get the ball rolling on talks regarding the formatting for Furnishing Summaries on Collections pages. -MolagBallet (talk) 05:13, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

  • And I believe MolagBallet is absolutely right. Collectibles such as these, with DUAL PURPOSE, are harder to maintain, in that they have more than 1 iteration, and ergo, more than one way to be searched for. The first and foremost use I believe is the IN WORLD actionable creature, whether it is a Banker to summon or a Mount to ride. This is the same with Allies. And I am sure more of these are coming soon! I know that MolagBallet has created the Collectible Template [??] I think that even adding one of these as a furnishing should maybe used THAT template? Whichever way it builds, I would like to make sure that LINKING is kept up. At least there will always be a path, to follow up, update as needed, etc. Erorah (talk) 05:29, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
  • As I've been updating the Mounts (Collectible) and created the Mounts Furnishings page + all requisite trails/links, and plan on eventually doing the same for Non-Combat Pets, I feel as though adding a parameter to the template for dual-purpose items would be nice. Thinking back at the Template for NPC Summary, the Gender category gets disabled if the creature parameter is set to 1— maybe something similar can be done for these special-use pages, but in reverse?
The main issue would be, of course, it clogging up Furniture that doesn't need to be, hence a "reverse" option (where the template gets added if the parameter is set, as opposed to it being removed if set to be). It would be the most feasible to have the Furnishing versions made before the Collectible versions because of this, but that would make things understandably complicated, especially if the Collectibles release before the Furnishing versions.
Ultimately, a "furnishing" check may be best to put on the Collectible template, as opposed to the Furnishing template getting a Collectible check, as many users are looking for the Collectible version. Plus, Collectible versions actually have icons appended to them, whereas many of the Furnishing versions do not. It may sound a bit nonsensical, but is it possible to have a "Furnishing=yes" added to Collection items that can then dump the relative Furniture data on that page, and have their Furnishing versions unlisted on Wiki searches? — Ingura (talk) 19:44, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

Mounts Cat to Mounts Furnishings PageEdit

I made the Mounts Furnishings page to ail my red link woes, would it be possible to set the template's Mounts category to link to it instead of the Collectible "subpage"? For sake of example, Undaunted Busts are a Collectible as well, but its subcategory links to a subpage from its category type and not its Collectible Furnishings subpage. I know it's slightly different probably due to the fact that its category isn't exclusive like Mounts is. — Ingura (talk) 19:44, 6 May 2022 (UTC)

No room for article textEdit

This template does not seem to have an option for placing prose on the articles it's used on. The pre-formatting on pages like Online:Daedric Enchanting Station means that it's impossible to add in-line prose, resulting in the text appearing either above or below the rest of the contents on the page. To illustrate:

Article text cannot be displayed here

Pre-formatting an entire page like this seems non-optimal to me as it's resulting in a large amount of white space on the page. Would it be possible to add an option to place the main text of the article in-line with the image and summary? —Legoless (talk) 09:40, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

So apparently this can be achieved with the "note" parameter. Even to me as a long-term editor, this is super unintuitive. I have fixed the above example but can we look at making this template more user-friendly for content editors? —Legoless (talk) 15:55, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
I don't see why we need to have possibly multiple paragraphs of information within the confines of the template. I believe the template should be reworked so that the article body can be separate. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 15:58, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
Agreed. I just realised that the "note" param is transcluded to the various list pages, e.g. Online:Furnishings/Achievements. This is patently not where the Notes section of a page belongs. Either we need to remove the transclusion of notes to list pages, or we need a separate option for inserting in-line prose on the page as AKB suggests. —Legoless (talk) 16:04, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
We mentioned this when the template first launched and the pages were created. Erorah wanted to do everything in one template, but she was aware that people would probably want to separate things out later on, as is our usual style. That, at least, let us get started on the furnishing pages so that we were all working from the same basic model and knew what things looked like. Now, though, it's probably time to separate everything out, since one monolithic template is non-optimal, as noted, especially when you're trying to add/format complex things. Robin Hood(talk) 16:15, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
As mentioned on Discord, the first phase of converting to normal text pages is done. Phase 2 will involve creating stand-alone templates for tables and such, then having the bot switch everything over. It's possible (even probable) that things will still be a little template-heavy at first, but once the bulk of the page is converted, whatever's left should be a lot easier to deal with and/or run smaller bot jobs on to convert whatever else we feel needs it. Spacing issueEdit

I have observed a spacing issue with this template when an additional section is added below the templated content:

Can these excessive linebreaks be removed? —Legoless (talk) 09:45, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

I'm working on this. Being as big of a template as it is, this will probably take a while and may not be 100% correct on the first try, so let me know if you spot any weirdness in the near future. Once that's done, I'll look at how to split the template into sections for the subject above. Robin Hood(talk) 16:17, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
This is fixed now. Robin Hood(talk) 05:45, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

Seals of Endeavor PriceEdit

This template needs a parameter for vor]]Seals of Endeavor   price. Currently there is only one furnishing available exclusively for Seals and not for Gems: Resplendent Sweetroll. —Legoless (talk) 12:21, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
