Detailed WalkthroughEdit

Becoming GrandmasterEdit

Once you have reached the rank of Councilman in House Hlaalu, questgivers will tell you that they can no longer advance you— to attain the rank of Grandmaster, you must speak to the Vizier of House Hlaalu, Ereven Peronys, who can be found in the Vizier's Tower in Narsis's Measurehall. Upon speaking to the Vizier and affirming that you do indeed seek the title of Grandmaster, he will inform you that current Grandmaster, Athires Hlaalu, has sought a successor for some time, and believes you may be worthy. However, Athires insists that the title shall only be given to someone who can exceed his monumental accomplishments. To prove yourself, the Vizier demands you perform a series of difficult tasks.

Hostile TakeoverEdit

Your first task is to oversee a hostile takeover of the East Empire Company, which maintains a trade monopoly in Morrowind among certain goods as part of the Armistice. To do this, the Vizier wants you to obtain a copy of their most recent earnings report and have it forged by chief clerk Nalis Doronil to sow chaos among the company's investors by convincing them the company is going under.

Luckily, the same EEC clerk, a Bosmer named Lalandel, brings the earnings report from Cyrodiil each quarter, and likes to stop by the Purple Lantern inn. Upon visiting the Purple Lantern, which is located near the western gate of the Market Quarter, you'll find Lalandel drinking alone by the bar on the bottom floor. She'll freely admit to carrying the earnings report, saying she's stopping by the inn so she can have a cup of goya, a local Hlaalu liquor she loves and can't get back in Cyrodiil. She won't give up the report quite yet, so there are a few things you can do to convince her:

  • If you're already the Factor of the East Empire Company, she'll be embarassed to meet you and profusely apologize. You can simply demand she hand over the earnings report and she will immediately give it to you.
  • The easiest solution otherwise is to indulge her with another bottle of goya. You can use any goya you'd like, but the bartender nearby conveniently sells a few bottles. After this, she'll say she feels sick, and will willingly give up the earnings report as long as you promise to deliver it for her.
  • Alternatively, you can simply kill her. This is the most brutish option, but also the most straightforward. To do this without incurring a bounty you can raise her Fight value, either by using a Frenzy Humanoid spell or taunting her. Once she's dead, simple take the earnings report off her corpse.
  • Strangest of all, you can offer her greydust instead of goya. If you do so, she'll mistake it for a drink and will down the entire bottle, immediately overdosing on it and dying.

Buy Low, Sell HighEdit

Regardless of how you acquired it, once you have the earnings report, it's time to talk to Nalis Doronil to get it forged. Nalis can be found at his home, Doronil Manor, which is in the Old Quarter of Narsis, just beneath the Eight-Bones Temple. Nalis won't forge the document for you, but he will tell you who can: one of his scribes named Ralden Goran. Nalis gives you the Note to Ralden Goran instructing him to help you as well as 20 scrip as payment for the job. Take the note and the scrip to the Chief Clerk's Office in the Measurehall, where Ralden can be found. He'll write up a fake version for you right away, full of fictional business failures and losses to crime. Return to the Vizier to enact the final stage of the plan.

The Vizier will now instruct you to bring the forged earnings report to the Mesa Exchange, Narsis' stock exchange, and give the report to the clerk to read out. In the ensuing chaos, your job is to find whoever is willing to sell their stock and purchase as much of it as you can while his agents work behind the scenes to do the same.

The Mesa Exchange can be found in the Market Quarter near Narsis' western gate, right across the street from the Purple Lantern. Upon entering, talk to Thona Zayria, and hand over the earnings report. She'll hesitantly read it off, announcing that the East Empire Company has failed to meet its quarterly earning goals for the first time ever. The exchange will erupt into chaos, with most of the present investors simply erratically yelling about buying and selling.

Seemingly the only one who has his head on straight is the Nord Harald Great-Mane standing in the corner, lamenting the situation. He's your target, as he offers to sell you his entire portfolio of EEC stock for half its purchasing price. However, at 100,000 septims, it's far from cheap, and to make matters worse, his mercantile skill of 70 means he drives a hard bargain. Even at 100 mercantile, you'll be lucky to get it for around 85,000. Additionally, whatever you do, do not kill Harald. Not only will his stock portfolio be conspicuously missing from his corpse, but returning to the Vizier will reveal that, because you killed an EEC investor right on the trading floor, they'll be launching an investigation assuming foul play, completely ruining your chances at ever becoming Grandmaster.

Unfortunately, there's no real way around it: you'll have to scrounge up the money one way or another. By the time you reach Councilman rank in House Hlaalu, however, you'll likely have quite a sizable amount of liquid cash sitting around, so this shouldn't be too hard. Purchase the portfolio from Harald and return to the Vizier.

Handing over Harald's portfolio to the Vizier, he'll congratulate you on your work, explaning that that shortly after the news broke, a representative was dispatched directly from the Imperial City to correct the record, and the quick thinking of you and his agents has earned House Hlaalu a very valuable minority stake in the East Empire Company now that the stock price is returning to normal. As a reward, he'll give you a peculiar weapon his agents found in an EEC storeroom: the Prototype Dwarven Repeater.

10Vizier Ereven Peronys is planning a hostile takeover of the Narsis East Empire Company. First, I must obtain the earnings report from the recently arrived courier. Next, I should take the report to the Chief Clerk Nalis Doronil in his manor to have its contents "altered". Afterwards, I should bring the report back to the Vizier before the next step begins.
20I offered the courier Lalandel greydust, which she took and immediately overdosed on.
30I gave Lalandel a bottle of goya, and she was more than eager to hand over the report afterwards.
40I used my status as Factor of the East Empire Company to convince Lalandel to give me the report.
50Nalis Doronil delegated the alteration to his subordinate Ralden Goran in the Chief Clerk's Office in the Measurehall. If I bring this note along with the scrip, he will do the job.
100Ralden Goran provided me with an altered East Empire Company earnings report.
110Ereven Peronys asked me to bring the altered report to the Mesa Exchange and give it to the broker there to announce. Once the news has spread and the stock value has plummeted, I must find someone willing to sell their entire portfolio, purchase it, and bring it back to the Vizier.
150I gave the altered report to Thona Zayria in the Mesa Exchange, who promptly read out the news of the EEC's disappointing results. The stock price fell sharply and traders began to panic.
200Finishes quest I gave Harald's EEC portfolio to Vizier Ereven Peronys. House Hlaalu now controls a minority share of the East Empire Company.
250Finishes quest With a trader dead and me to blame, Ereven says I can't be trusted with the grandmaster position.
