WalkthroughEdit

This quest can be triggered in a couple of ways. The official way to begin this quest is to head to Riften and find the "Public Notice" that should be held via dagger to the exterior entrance door to the Ratway on the lower walkway. Sometimes this note will be on the ground or even clipping into the door bottom. It can be found by searching with the cursor. Reading this note begins the quest. The other way to start it is to explore the Ratway until you run into the ghost. She's in the same location as the Skeever cage that holds "Skritch", the tamed Skeever from the Pets of Skyrim creation. Not far from this chamber is the location of the Shadowfoot Sanctum entrance.

The ghost will be seen entering The Guardian Vault. Before following her, examine the dead mage named Vellonus and find Sellonus's Confession. Upon entering the vault, an alcove on the left holds a skeleton that can be looted of a note entitled, "Guild Mage's Last Words". Further in, a huge sewer chamber is revealed with a sword floating within some sort of magical field that glows red. There are doors in every direction. The door to the west is open while the rest are sealed shut. Head through that way and you'll face the first of three guardians. Defeat him and explore the chamber. Make your way around the wooden platforms. The first gap across the room can be reached by scaling the wall above the doorway. A guild mage skeleton is visible in the first upper room. Now, leap on the hand railing and make a running jump across to the boards leading to the front of the chamber. Make your way up to find a smuggler's skeleton and loot.

Return to the sword chamber and the magic field changes to Green as the Northern door opens up. Go through that door and go up first to face the second guardian within a small torture chamber. In one of the jails on the left side, you'll see a skeleton sitting. This is Verrick Tilwald. He'll immediately attack, so be ready to knock him into a bone pile. Verrick's Note sits on the table with a dagger through it. Reading it adds the side quest Bloodthirst. Head back out and follow the ramp to the bottom where three Cursed Smugglers emerge from the waters to attack you. Finish them off and return to the sword chamber once more.

This time, you will witness the magic sword turning green, with a mighty rumble. The final door opens for you to enter. Inside is a waterlogged pit type area with steps on the other side leading up to a sarcophagus. Examine some of the numerous skeletons to find some loot and the Guild Mage's Missive. Touch the Tomb of the Guardian's Wife and prepare to fight off hordes of skeletons and cursed smugglers along with the final guardian. Once the guardian's health is diminished, it transforms into Lorant Bouchard, who returns with from the dead at full health. Defeat him in corporeal form and loot his corpse for the Letter from Home, along with a Blades sword, shield and entire armor set.

Return to the sword chamber one last time to see the ghosts of Lorant and his wife Emma reuniting. The sword can now be taken.
