Chief Yamarz

Yamarz is an Orc warrior and the chief of the accursed Orc stronghold of Largashbur, located in the Rift, east of Avanchnzel. He is generally unpleasant and displays many traits not normally associated with Orcs such as a conniving nature and an aversion to battle. It is never fully explained why Malacath cursed his tribe, but it's implied that Yamarz's weaknesses as leader are a reflection of the curse itself. This would help explain why Malacath charges Yamarz alone with the task of slaying the leader of the giant tribe that has defiled his shrine.

Yamarz is clad in a complete set of Orcish equipment. This includes the cuirass, a pair of gauntlets, a pair of boots, and a helmet. He is equipped with a leveled war axe and a leveled shield, both of which can be up to Orcish quality.

The Cursed TribeEdit

When first spoken to:

"Curses aren't enough, now I must suffer you too? What is it?"
"Why are you here, outsider?"
I'm just here to help.
"Oh, of course! Because Malacath would take pity on us if only a useless outsider would lend a hand."
How long has this been going on?
"Weeks? Longer? It feels like an age has gone by. I haven't slept in so long."

As you enter the Largashbur Longhouse with Atub:

Atub: "It is time, Yamarz."
Yamarz: "You bring an outsider here, and now insist I call on Malacath for help, when he has clearly forsaken me? You try my patience, Atub."
Atub: "Doing nothing will not grant our tribe relief from this curse. We must try."
Yamarz: "Grrr. Fine, let's get this over with."

Atub and Yamarz will then leave the longhouse and begin the ritual to speak to Malacath:

Atub: "Now, we begin the ritual... Great Malacath, we beseech you, aid us in our time of need..."
Yamarz: "Why are we bothering with this?"
Malacath: "You pathetic weakling!"
Yamarz: "What's that?"
Atub: "Malacath has heard my pleas! He speaks to us!"
Malacath: "You dare summon me, Yamarz?"
Yamarz: "What? What is this?"
Malacath: "You don't deserve to call yourself an Orc! You're weak, you're small, and you're an embarrassment! You let giants... Giants!... overrun my shrine. Bring me their leader's club as an offering, and I might release you from this curse!"
Atub: "So it will be. Malacath has spoken, Yamarz. Your path is clear."
Yamarz: "Very well. You, outsider, come here! I want a word."

When spoken to:

"This is all your fault, you know. I'm stuck fighting a giant now, thanks to you. So you're going to help me. You're going with me, and you're going to make sure I don't have any trouble reaching that giant. Don't worry, I'll make it worth your while."
Fighting the giant isn't my job.
"Thanks to you, I've just been issued a challenge in front of my whole tribe, by a Daedric Prince, no less. I can't ignore that. I didn't say I wouldn't fight the giant. I just said you're going to help me get to it. Meet me outside Fallowstone Cave. You clear the way to the giant for me, and I'll make sure you get paid for it."
What do you want me to do?
"This giant... It's not the only thing in Fallowstone Cave. Getting to it isn't going to be easy. You're going to clear a path to the giant, so I can conserve my strength. I'll make sure you're paid for it. So you meet me at Fallowstone Cave, and we'll get this over with. I can have my tribe back, and you can... You can leave us alone."

At Fallowstone Cave:

"Let's just get this over with."
"If there's a chance this will save me, then I'm taking it."
"I'll lead the way, but you'd better back me up."

In the Giant's Grove:

"All right, I'll go kill this giant. Unless, of course, you'd like to make some extra gold."
What do you mean?
"I'm tired, I haven't slept well in weeks. You kill the giant, bring me the hammer. We go back to Largashbur, I tell everyone I did it. You keep your mouth shut, and I pay you. Handsomely."
Okay, I'll do it.
"Good. I'll be waiting right here."
No, you're supposed to do it.
"Fine, then wait here. This should only take a second."

Returning to him with the hammer:

"Excellent work. You have a true fighting spirit. Did that better than I could have. Of course, I can't let you leave here alive. Wouldn't want anyone finding out."

He will then turn hostile and must be killed.

UnusedEdit

Chief Yamarz has quite a bit of unused dialogue related to (what appears to be) a different start for the quest The Cursed Tribe.

I understand you need help.
"Atub! Meddlesome woman... You would help us? Help me? Tell me, outsider. Can you banish spirits? For that is what I need."
I'm sorry, what?
"Spirits! Ghosts! I am cursed, haunted, and I can do nothing. Can you fix that? Of course you cannot. No one can. It is my lot as Chief of this tribe, and so I suffer quietly."
What kind of spirits?
"The kind that curse you, haunt you in the dead of night. There is nothing you can do, nothing anyone can do. Shagrol, once the leader of this tribe, unhappy with his demise, has dealt with Malacath himself to curse me, curse us all."

Regardless of which option you chose, you would then follow up with:

There must be something I can do.
"You? An outsider? I'd sooner slit my own throat than accept help from you. To even consider it would be such a sign of weakness that I might as well abandon my tribe now."
You have to do this yourself?
"I am the one cursed by Malacath. It is my burden. I bear it, and continue to lead, and the others see how strong I am. That is how I rule."
A truly strong chief would break the curse, not suffer from it.
"Hrmph. Breaking a curse is not a simple thing. It is dangerous. But... To have won against Malacath himself... That would be seen as real power."
So use me to help you break this curse.
"You persist? Fine. You go tell Malacath to lift this curse from me. See how well he listens to you. Offer yourself up as a sacrifice while you're there."
I could help you in secret.
"Are you blind, or just stupid? You think the tribe has not seen you talking to me? You think they would not know? Do not mistake our life for one of stupidity. It would be the last mistake you make."
Having an outsider do your bidding might seem powerful...
"Perhaps... Perhaps it might. If nothing else, you could be an excellent sacrifice to Malacath. You really want to help? You go offer yourself at Malacath's Shrine. Petition him for help. He might not devour you whole."

You would then be sent to Atub in order to further the quest. Yamarz has no further unused upon your return, however. Notably, this unused dialogue adresses Yamarz's curse and where it came from, while this is never elaborated upon in the final game.

BugsEdit

  • If Yamarz is kept pacified, The Cursed Tribe will still complete but won't acknowledge he is still alive.
    •   The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.2.7, addresses this issue. Magic effect InfluenceAggDownFFAimedArea has been modified to make Yamarz immune to Pacify and other spells which use this effect.
  • Yamarz's sleep package can't activate due to it being blocked by his general sandbox package.
  • When Yamarz says "It's not the only thing in Fallowstone Cave", the actual audio instead states "It's not the only thing in the Fallowstone Cave".
