Radiant OptionsEdit

This is a radiant quest which you can receive in any of the nine holds of Skyrim. The name of the objective appearing in your journal will be one of the following, depending upon the hold:

Quick WalkthroughEdit

Before starting this quest, you must first befriend the jarl of the hold.

  1. Speak to the jarl to receive the quest.
  2. Improve the disposition of three or five people of that hold, usually by doing favor quests for them.
  3. Return to the jarl.

Detailed WalkthroughEdit

You will need to improve the disposition of three people for the minor holds Falkreath, Hjaalmarch, the Pale, and Winterhold. For the major holds Eastmarch, Haafingar, the Reach, the Rift, and Whiterun, you will need to help five people. The people you help must be ordinary citizens of the hold; members of Khajiit caravans and Orcs living in strongholds do not count, and neither does befriending the hold's Jarl (as that is a prerequisite to being given the objective).

Disposition can be improved in any of the following ways:

Citizens that you befriend before starting this quest also count towards your total, and as such, it is possible to complete this objective for a particular hold immediately after starting the Thane quest. Also, citizens that you befriended which then died still count towards your total. (Usually in those cases, you will have received an Inheritance.)

NotesEdit

  • While the Rift thane quest is active, most of its objectives do not show up in your journal. The Rift thane quest uses its own code to replace the functions of this quest, so Objective 20 is never assigned. The requirement to assist citizens of the Rift is replaced by an invisible requirement to complete miscellaneous objectives in Riften, which starts automatically after completing Supply and Demand. The game will track the number of Riften quests you complete, unlike in other holds where you are required to ask the jarl if there is something you can do to help first. Once you have completed enough miscellaneous quests, you will be given an objective to return to the Jarl of Riften.
  • If Balgruuf is Jarl of Whiterun, you cannot receive this quest from him. He will make you Thane as a quest reward for completing Dragon Rising, which is early in the main quest. Only if you side with the Stormcloaks and remove him from power is this quest available in Whiterun.

BugsEdit

  • "Assist the people of Haafingar" may not be cleared from your quest log by Solitude's jarl once completed, though you are able to become a thane and gain a housecarl in your home (once purchased). The concern may be complicated by having already helped five people before talking to the jarl for the first time.
    •   Entering the console command setobjectivecompleted FavorJarlsMakeFriends 30 1 after becoming a thane may resolve this.
    • Continuing to assist the people of Haafingar can cause the counter to update to 6/5, at which point the objective is completed and cleared from the quest log.

Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage FavorJarlsMakeFriends stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest FavorJarlsMakeFriends.
