DialogueEdit
Speaking with her, she will sense something hanging around you and will ask you some questions to determine what it is:
- "There is an aura of death about you, a quite dour and pervasive one at that. It's a good thing we found each other, I can patch you up in no time.
Just need to identify the source of your spiritual malaise." - I feel fine.
- "That may be so, but I've learned that spirits are crafty. And calling on them is often necessary. As my mentor, ghost-hunting expert Claudina Illdene, would say—it's healthy to set boundaries in relationships. Especially with the dead."
- Now that you mention it, I do feel a little off.
- "Of course you do. To quote the famous ghost hunter Claudina Illdene—we mustn't shoulder the burdens of those who are gone. Their weight is light on the body, but heavy on the mind."
Regardless of how you feel, she will answer your next question:
- What should I do?
- "Well, the next step is complicated. I need to identify the spiritual passenger you are dealing with. Have you been in any locations rife with death lately? A terrifying cave, or haunted ruin? A forsaken forest, perhaps?"
She will then ask a series of questions in an attempt to determine what type of spirit you are afflicted with. First is the location where you might have encountered it:
- A cave.
- "That makes sense. Subterranean places attract all manner of woeful entities. They reside within the crevasses, hide behind boulders, and wait beneath black pools. Did you encounter anything in the darkness?"
- A ruin.
- "The ghosts of civilization are almost always riddled with spirits stuck remembering their old lives. Some are malicious, some are amicable. Did you meet anything specific between the crumbling walls?"
- Wilderness.
- "Plenty of creatures, both spectral and corporeal, roam the wilds. There are as many lost souls looking to take comfort in your mortal form as there are malicious entities who seek to take your life for themselves. Which did you run afoul of?"
Next is the type of enemy you encountered there:
- Beasts and monsters.
- "I thought I sensed something savage about you. Your passenger covets a hunt. Death was not enough to sate their blood lust even though the hunt is over. Now on to you, how are you feeling?"
- Men and mer.
- "Your passenger seeks the familiar to distract them from their plight. They hide in you to enjoy a dull likeness of the life they left behind. I'm afraid it will never be enough to satisfy their craving. Now tell me, how are you feeling?"
- I can't say.
- "I sense a strong, defiant, will. This entity relies on your ignorance to slowly overtake your thoughts and actions. If I'm correct, your passenger knows what they're doing and doesn't care about the danger you're in. Are you feeling all right?"
And then finally, she will ask you how you feel about it - About the same, Excited, or Nervous, and she will diagnose your spirit. The type appears to be based on only the type of creature and your feeling about it:
Type | Feeling | Diagnosis |
---|---|---|
Beasts and monsters. | Nervous. | Lurking |
Excited. | Traveler | |
About the same. | Possession | |
Men and mer. | Nervous. | Possession |
Excited. | Lurking | |
About the same. | Traveler | |
I can't say. | About the same. | Lurking |
Excited. | Possession | |
Nervous. | Traveler |
She will explain what type of spirit you have:
- "Hmm, a spirit that seeks to avoid detection. Oh, oh no. There is a Possession-type spirit within you. If left untreated, it will infiltrate your mind, consuming all your thoughts until you have no identity left. Shall I begin the cleansing rites?"
- "I believe you are afflicted with a Lurking-type spirit. These entities wait in lonely places for hosts and avoid detection by settling deep into the recesses of your mind. Shall I begin the cleansing rites?"
- "Of course! You are afflicted with a Traveler-type spirit. These entities seek those with a passion for adventure. In extreme cases, their influence towards recklessness has been known to lead to their host's death. Shall I begin the cleansing rites?"
And, finally, you can decide whether you want the entity removed or not.
- No, I will keep my spirit.
- "Very well. As Claudina would say—I admire the questioning nature of a skeptic, and look forward to continuing our discussions when next we meet.
Of course, they're usually not alive for the second meeting, but maybe your fate will be different."
- "Very well. As Claudina would say—I admire the questioning nature of a skeptic, and look forward to continuing our discussions when next we meet.
- Yes, begin the cleansing rite.
If you choose to begin the rite, Mayrineh will light incense and say one of the following to begin the ritual.
- Spirit Hunter Mayrineh: "Begone, undead traveler. Let this living host be free of your blight."
- Spirit Hunter Mayrineh: "Your time on this plane has ended, spirit. The Far Shores call you. Go from this place and never return."
- Spirit Hunter Mayrineh: "I cast you from this form, spirit. May Azura's light guide you home."

The spirit of an elderly woman appears behind her, and Mayrineh turns around.
Mayrineh will then react with one of these lines:
The spirit, Elder Bereha, responds with one of the following:
|
A spectral Hagraven appears nearby and says one of the following:
|
A Dunmer spirit, Tharer Alver, appears nearby and says one of the following:
|
After this, the spirit disappears. Mayrineh says farewell if you talk to her:
- "May the spirits leave you in peace. Safe travels."
If you decided to not cleanse the spirit:
- "Lost souls flutter all around us, looking for a refuge. Best not to give them one."
