Released on January 20 2020.
Welcome to The Elder Scrolls Online v5.3.0 and the start of the Dark Heart of Skyrim with the Harrowstorm DLC game pack! Harrowstorm introduces two new 4-player dungeons – Icereach and Unhallowed Grave – in addition to a number of new item sets and collectibles. Our biggest focus for this update was further improving game performance, with an emphasis on frame rate stability, ultimately resulting in fewer drops in your game's framerate. The combat changes you'll see support this goal, which you can read more about in this forum post.
Additionally, please take note for this update, we're refreshing our patching and file manifest data to remove duplicate files and older data that is no longer needed. This will result in major improvements to load times, streaming of assets, reliability of asset loads, and a reduction of space taken up by the client on your hard drive. In order to achieve this, you will be required to re-download the entirety of the game for PTS. To this end, the size of this update is 68.55GB. Note you do not have to delete anything manually; just let the patcher run on its own.
All PC/Mac North American characters have been copied, and a Harrowstorm template is also available for you to use. Thanks in advance for all your feedback on this update!
New Features / Updates / Big ChangesEdit
Harrowstorm DLC Game PackEdit
Two New DungeonsEdit
- Icereach: Hidden among the churning waves of the Sea of Ghosts, this frigid isle serves as the seat of power for the cruel Icereach Coven. Now, lashing storms swirl around it. Could this be a natural phenomenon, or something more sinister?
- Unhallowed Grave: Long ago, the soldiers of the Bangkorai Garrison buried something away in this accursed cavern—an evil too great to leave unguarded. Now, centuries later, even the most daring Redguard explorers know to give this grave a wide berth.
- Icereach and Unhallowed Grave are 4-player Dungeons which can be reached via Wrothgar and Bangkorai respectively.
- Icereach's entrance is in northern Wrothgar, on the coast. The entrance is a boat used to travel to the Dungeon.
- Unhallowed Grave's entrance is in southeastern Bangkorai, southwest of the Fallen Wastes Dolmen.
- Both Dungeons include a Normal version in addition to a challenging Veteran version.
- There are unique item sets, including two new Undaunted Monster Mask sets, only available within the Dungeons.
- Unique Achievement awards are available for completing the Dungeons, including:

Performance ImprovementsEdit
Frame rate stability improvements have been achieved by optimizing several systems. This means you will now encounter fewer drops in framerate, maintaining a smoother display of motion on screen. Please see below for a brief explanation of the technical work that was completed to support this.
- Optimized multi-threading implementation to improve performance in situations with lots of effects (particles, projectile effects, weather, etc.) happening at the same time.
- Optimized specific processes that could cause spikes in resource usage and cause FPS drops.
- Parallelized the fixture update processes, allowing them to utilize multiple cores to improve overall performance of the game client.
- Added additional miscellaneous CPU optimizations including the following:
- Parallelized terrain loading
- Optimized the Tutorial GUI
- Optimized compass pins
- Miscellaneous function improvements
New PvP CampaignsEdit
Four new PvP campaigns will be opening with the launch of Update 25 and are all appropriately themed with the Dark Heart of Skyrim. - Skeletal Mage and Spirit Mender and their morphs' corpses will now last 10 seconds, rather than 5 seconds.
- Improved the targeting areas from all tether abilities, and will now link to the corpse closest to your reticle from a much larger radius.

- Grave Lord

Combat & AbilitiesEdit
GeneralEdit
- Updated block to be calculated more efficiently by the server, similarly to Sprint. Sets and passives that key off block or "While Blocking/While Bracing" now more accurately update as you transition between actively blocking and not.
- Overall, the core block behaviors are untouched between mechanics and cost.
- We will be monitoring the forums and other areas for feedback and bug reports, so please make sure to provide feedback on this change if you run into any strange behaviors or have questions.
- Activating block while animating an ability or attack will now blend the animation more fluidly instead of completely obfuscating the attack. The core mechanics to block cancelling remain untouched, but now display more of the previous attack's animation before your character animates the block.
- Note the visual effects for blocking still appear as soon as block as officially activated, which has been untouched in terms of how long it takes to activate.
- Fixed an issue where you could activate Block when you didn't have enough Stamina to actually block the next attack. You will now need to have adequate resources based on your Block cost in order to activate and successfully Block the next attack.
- Attacks that reduce your Stamina to 0 continue to remove Block after you successfully mitigate the effect. In some some cases where a secondary effect like Bleeds occur, the Bleed will still be applied. This is currently not intended and will be adjusted in the future.
- Attacks that reduce your Stamina to 0 continue to remove Block after you successfully mitigate the effect. Effects that normally would be mitigated via block through this scenario will no longer cancel their effects, since your ability to block has been removed.
- Fixed an issue where using a single target charge, leap, or teleport ability would not remove targets from stealth or invisibility while you had a detection potion active.
- Fixed an issue where many Damage over Time effects were gaining the effectiveness of Stealth bonuses, such as guaranteed critical strikes or stunning targets.
- Fixed many issues where sources of healing could be dodged or blocked if sourced from item sets or NPC abilities.
- Bash now properly cancels channeled abilities when you do not have a target to successfully bash.
- The following "thorns", or damage return-based abilities, now have a 7 meter range on their effect, rather than infinite ranges:
- Spiked Armor and its morphs
- Living Dark's Snare
- Spiked Bone Armor
- Summoned pets from player abilities, such as Summon Unstable Familiar, will now behave more consistently with other abilities when entering deep water. This means they will no longer deal damage or heal while in this state. Leaving deep water will return the pet to its default state, which in some cases, may require the ability to be reactivated.
- Fixed an issue where some leap and charge abilities could not be cast while immobilized.
- Fixed an issue where many leap and charge abilities would move your character in odd ways if you cast the ability in close range.
- Updated the control and responsiveness of many charge and leap abilities so they reach fast moving targets more reliably, as well as allow you take action more fluidly after casting them.
- Fixed an issue where many leap and charge abilities would fail to apply their effects if you began sprinting after activating them.
- Off Balance will now properly update its size against the varying Target Dummies.
- Updated Off Balance to behave more consistently across content in the game.
- Off Balance now lasts 7 seconds from player sourced abilities and sets.
- Off Balance is no longer reapplied to a target for 15 seconds once the original source of Off Balance ends. This cooldown is displayed as a debuff on targets once they are affected.
- Off Balance is no longer consumed on targets from Heavy Attacks or abilities.
- Note these rules may be irrelevant in some areas, such as tutorials, where the core focus is teaching the behavior of what Off Balance does
Buffs and DebuffsEdit
- Major & Minor Heroism: These buffs will now only grant Ultimate while in combat. This prevents these buffs from keeping you in combat longer than intended.
DragonknightEdit
- Ardent Flame
- Dragonknight Standard: Fixed an issue where the first 3 ticks of this Ultimate and its morphs would appear to happen instantaneously.
- Draconic Power
- Dragon Leap: This Ultimate will now properly animate its leap on targets, regardless of its range, resulting in more overall reaction time for those on the receiving end of being DK dunked.
- Protective Scale: This ability now grants damage mitigation to abilities more appropriately described in the tooltip.
- Earthen Heart
- Molten Weapons:
- Molten Armaments (morph): Fixed an issue where the Major Brutality granted from this ability could fail to apply to group members in certain situations.
- Stonefist: Updated this ability to improve its visual storytelling and per-cast impact; Stonefist is now a two-part ability instead of a singular instant mid-ranged attack.
- Activating this ability will now stomp the earth, causing you to deal damage in an area around you after a short cast time, and generating 3 charges of the ability.
- Activating the ability again allows you to lob one of the earthen spheres around you to an enemy from up to 28 meters away to damage them.
- The base ability no longer has the Stagger mechanic, but instead the final charge will stun the enemy hit upon dealing damage.
- Stone Giant (morph):
- This morph retains stagger in the form of causing the targets affected by the ranged attack to take additional damage.
- Increased the damage taken per stack to 65 at rank IV, up from 45.
- Stone Giant (morph):
- Molten Weapons:
NightbladeEdit
- Shadow

- Lightning Splash: Reduced the cost of this ability and its morphs to 3780, down from 4950.
- Overload: Fixed an issue where toggling this ability would dismount you, and updated many sets to properly key off Overload and its morphs where they stated they required Heavy Attacks.
- Bolt Escape
TemplarEdit
- Aedric Spear
- Spear Shards: Reduced the cost of this ability and its morphs to 3780, down from 4950.
- Dawn's Wrath
- Nova: This ability and its morphs now have a negative telegraph so you can properly tell if the heavens are being called down to protect you or smite you.
- Restoring Light
- Sacred Ground: This passive no longer snares enemies in the area. Instead, it increases your Block Mitigation by an additional 10% while standing in one of the mentioned abilities.
WardenEdit
- Green Balance
- Living Vines: Fixed an issue where you would slowly turn to your target receiving the cast if they ran out of your field of vision while activating. You will now immediately snap to their direction and cast the ability.
- Winter's Embrace
- Glacial Presence: This passive now also increases your Critical Damage against enemies, and Critical Healing against allies who have been recently afflicted with the Chilled status effect.
WeaponEdit

Base Game Fixes & ImprovementsEdit

Battlegrounds
- You can now only queue as a solo player into Battlegrounds.
- Reset the Battleground matchmaking ratings for all players.
- Developer Comment: This is a big change to Battlegrounds matchmaking which we are executing partially in response to player feedback and partially as an experiment. We recognize the change will prevent players from being able to reliably team up with friends in Battlegrounds, but it should also improve both the speed of matchmaking and the competitiveness of PvP matches. As part of the change, we are resetting the matchmaking rating (MMR) of all players, so going forward, the system more properly evaluates individuals based on their performance in the solo queue. We'll be closely monitoring both player feedback and the impact of these changes on the system.

- Impresario's Group Repair Kit

In reviewing Halls of Fabrication, we evaluated the Trial based on a number of factors - rate of completion, age of content, player feedback/sentiment, etc. - and felt adjustments were needed. The noted changes will result in the extreme difficulty spikes being toned down a bit, making it more accessible for more players.
