Dialogue is uttered by NPCs throughout Tamriel and beyond. Many NPCs, from heavily story-relevant characters like Abnur Tharn to trivial world fillers like Renam Thervayn have something to say.
SubtitlesEdit
The Elder Scrolls Online is fully voiced, and subtitles exist for most forms of dialogue. Subtitles for spoken lines that occur outside a dialogue menu can be enabled in two ways:
- Subtitles that appear near the bottom of the screen as the line is spoken and fade when the line ends can be enabled in the settings while playing as a selected character. The setting is accessed under Settings/Audio/NPC Subtitles.
- Subtitles that appear in the chat window can be enabled while playing as a selected character by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of the chat box in the desired chat tab, selecting "Options", and checking the box labeled "NPC" under "Filters".
Subtitles for pre-rendered videos can be toggled under Settings/Audio/Video Subtitles. This setting can be accessed anywhere a settings menu appears, including the log in screen, character select, and the "pause" menu while playing a selected character.
Generic DialogueEdit
Some NPCs have no unique dialogue of their own; however, this does not mean they lack a voice pool to pull from. Generic dialogue exists in many forms throughout ESO, as listed below:
- Ambient Dialogue — Unsubtitled dialogue that serves to add flavor to the world
- Dragon Sighting Dialogue — Fearful exclamations made during event-specific appearances by dragons in populated areas
- Greetings — Client-side dialogue uttered by a wide range of NPCs when you walk by
- Justice Dialogue — Uttered by justice neutral NPCs when they are faced with criminal activity
- Overheard Dialogue — Uttered by hostile NPCs before or at the start of combat
- Guard Dialogue — Uttered by the guards who accost wanted criminals
- Guild Trader Dialogue — Uttered by guild traders with nothing unique to say upon interaction
