Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Start the quest by talking to the Knave of Rooks, a talking crow that can be found either perched on the stairs of a burned house in the southwest area of Crow's Wood. This is the same house you are instructed to visit during A Son's Promise. Or alternatively the Rook can be cound upon a large piece of stone where the BlackFeather Court gathers, northwest of the Court Magister, which is the same spot where he can be found after finishing the quest The Knave of Rooks will stop you and tell you that you either have to pay the toll of flesh or the toll of silver, otherwise you'll be pestered by the Blackfeather Court. You can ask about the tolls before you pick one.
- For the toll of flesh, you need to kill eight giant bats. You'll find them north of the burned out house, on high ground, typically in groups of three. Fight carefully: several of them are interspersed between groups of ghosts, and it is easy to get ganged up on and potentially overwhelmed. Every time you kill a giant bat, crows will descend from the skies to pick the corpse clean.
- To pay the toll of silver you must collect four silver trinkets from Slain Adventurers: a Silver Arrowhead, a Silver Buckle, a Silver Dagger and a Silver Ring.
The arrow can be pulled free from the back of a skeleton behind the ruined house close to The Moonlit Maiden. The buckle can be found on a skeleton just to the west of the ruined passage that leads to the upper levels of the islnad. The dagger can be found north of the ruined house stabbed into the ground within the entrence of the cave where Buron is located. The ring was once worn by an adventurer who attempted to shelter in Grizzlehide's cave in the wolves valley, where the great bear and the slain adventurer's last note still reside.
Once you've gathered what you need, locate the Seneschal of Carrion near the center of Crow's Wood. Give him your tribute. He'll thank you for paying the toll, and then refer you to the Duke of Crows. The Duke is perched near the Seneschal. Speak to him to complete the quest.
NotesEdit
- In the treasure pile near the Duke of Crows, you can examine an inscribed flute from a M'aiq to his son, M'aiq. This is probably a reference to M'aiq the Liar, a long-running gag character who has appeared in many of The Elder Scrolls games.
- If a player climbs to the top of the tower in the wolves area where the Hidden Nest trapdoor is hidden, they can find the Knight of Marrow who will reveal he is on his own quest to collect bone marrow for the Duke.
