Faction(s) | Skingrad Citizen; Guild for Mages (Evoker ) |
Adrienne Berene, a Breton mage, is the head of the Skingrad Mages Guild, even though another member in the Guildhall outranks her. She is the only Guild head in Cyrodiil who has the rank of Evoker, rather than that of Wizard. She sells a wide array of Destruction spells. Since her Mercantile skill is only 6, you can buy spells from her for a cheap price.
She is very much a scholarly mage, spending most of her time during the day reading the tome that she has obtained from the Guild library: The Eastern Provinces. She does so at first in the library on the second floor, from 8am to midday, when she takes a two-hour break to eat lunch, and then from 2pm to 6pm. After eating dinner, at 8pm she resumes her studies, this time in her room, in the Living Quarters. She finally stops at midnight, when she calls it a day and sleeps for a good eight hours. If, for any reason, she cannot carry out these actions she will wander around the Guild building. She offers her services as a spell merchant whenever she is not sleeping or eating.
She wears a blue velvet outfit and a pair of gold trimmed shoes, as well as carrying her book and a small amount of gold. She doesn't carry any weapons, and relies on her particularly powerful set of Master and Expert level Destruction spells, though she cannot cast all of them (see Bugs).

- Skingrad Recommendation: Find a missing mage to obtain a recommendation from Skingrad.
DialogueEdit
- Skingrad
- "What? You want a tour? Can't you see I have a lot on my mind? Go bother a beggar or guard... they stand around and chatter all day."
- Mages Guild
- "There's at least one person in every guild hall who offers spells; check at every hall to make sure you don't miss any."
- Arcane University
- "It's been the home of the Mages Guild for the longest time. You should see the library they have there! It's the only place worth visiting in the Imperial City, if you ask me. I only make the trip if I can't find a specific book here."
Quest-Related EventsEdit
Join the Mages GuildEdit
Speak to Druja about the Guild before joining up, and she'll point you towards Adrienne:
- "Adrienne can make you a member of the guild, if you can convince her to take her nose out of whatever book she's reading."
When you meet her for the first time, her dialogue depends on whether you are a member of the Mages Guild or not. If you aren't she will say:
- "Hmm, what? I'm rather busy right now. Oh, is this about joining the Mages Guild? I suppose I could spare the time, if necessary."
If you are already a member however, she will say:
- "I trust you have good reason for interrupting me?"
If you ask her if you can join, she will tell you:
- "You're interested in joining? Great things will be expected of you. Are you sure you're ready for it?"
-
- "Well then. If you re-think your decision, I'll be around."
-
- "Then you are now an Associate of the Mages Guild. You must receive a recommendation from every local guild hall in Cyrodiil before you may advance through the ranks of the guild. In the meantime, as a member of the guild, you now have full access to the guild halls around Cyrodiil. Only the Arcane University is closed to you."
However, should you have a bounty on your head, she will tell you you're unable to join the Mages Guild at the moment:
- "You're a wanted criminal, hardly the sort of person that has a place in the guild. Clean up that record of yours, and maybe you'll be considered."
Skingrad RecommendationEdit
When you visit the guildhall and ask about a Recommendation, the other guild members will hint at her persona:
- Druja: "Oh no, that's Adrienne's job, not mine. If you ask about it, don't be surprised if she's annoyed. She doesn't like being interrupted."
- Sulinus Vassinus: "Adrienne Berene is the person you're looking for. I'm sure she'll be more than happy to help you."
- Vigge the Cautious: "Adrienne is in charge. You'll need to speak to her about it, if you can tear her away from her latest book."
She is so involved in her own studies that she seems to have trouble keeping track of her chapter members and to make matters worse, it was one of her outbursts that forced one of her chapter members, Erthor, to study the art of magic elsewhere.
If you are already a member of the Mages Guild, she will say the following should you approach her:
- "I hope this is important, Associate."
- Recommendation
- "I'm afraid I haven't given it much thought. I'm rather busy, you understand. My research occupies nearly all of my time. Now that I think about it, I do have a small problem concerning Erthor. He's one of the guild mages here. Think you can do something about it?"
- No, not right now.
- "Very well. Come see me when you're ready, and we'll get started."
If you mention the recommendation later on if you said no to helping her she will say:
- "Oh yes. You still need that, don't you. Well, are you ready to take care of that matter for me now?"
Once you accept:
- Yes, I'll do it.
- "Excellent. I just don't have the time to search for him again, but I do need to consult him about some notes he borrowed. You might want to ask around, and see if anyone can be of some help. Let me know when he's back, and you'll have your recommendation."
- Erthor
- "He's... well, an interesting fellow. Sulinus Vassinus can tell you more about him, if you wish to know. Sulinus should be around here somewhere. Talk to him if you'd like to know more about Erthor."
If you bring up the recommendation again before finding Erthor:
- Recomendation
- "Any luck finding Erthor yet? I'll need to speak with him before I can feel your recommendation has been earned."
Once you then exit conversation, she will say:
- "Have Erthor see me when he gets back, Associate."
After speaking to Druja:
- "You're here about that recommendation, I presume. I'll need to speak to Erthor before I write it."
- Bleak Flats Cave
- "Oh, I do remember telling him to go there... hmm. Well, we'll just have to do something about that, won't we? By we I mean you of course. I have something that may help - it's a basic fireball spell, in case you need to defend yourself. I'll be here when you get back. Good luck!"
She will then teach you the Weak Fireball spell.
If you mention Erthor again:
- Erthor
- "You said he was at Bleak Flats Cave. Haven't you looked there for him?"
At this point if you had accepted the offer of Sulinus to get Erthor, or once you have found Erthor yourself, she will ask the following should you approach her:
- "I hope you've found Erthor."
Once you have located Erthor and escorted him back to the guild she will enter conversation with him:
Erthor: "Adrienne, I'm back! I was rescued!"
Adrienne: "So it would seem. You are unharmed, I presume?"
Erthor: "Well, my pride is a little wounded..."
Adrienne: "Oh, spare me. You're lucky I bothered to send someone after you at all. In the future, would you please be more careful?"
Erthor: "Erm, well... yes. I'll just pack up my supplies and be on my way, then. Thank you for sending someone to help me."
After this cold reunion, asking Adrienne about a recommendation will get you one:
- Recommendation
- "I've spoken with Erthor, who seems to be all right. Good work. I'll see to it that your recommendation is sent in, as soon as I have a free moment. As I've said, I am rather busy. I'll get to it eventually though, I assure you."
If you return to Adrienne after you have all recommendations she'll point out:
- "You have all the recommendations you need, I believe. Raminus Polus will want to speak with you. You can find him at the Arcane University."
Mages Guild SuspensionEdit
Should you be suspended from the Guild, she will refer you to Raminus Polus:
- "Oh, your guild privileges have been suspended. You should speak with Raminus Polus at the Arcane University to rectify the situation."
RumorsEdit
Adrienne's unworldliness is a regular topic between her fellow Guild members:
- "Have you spoken with Adrienne today?"
- "Yes, I did, in fact. I didn't think she was paying attention though."
- "That's not surprising. Sometimes I wonder if she forgets to eat, being so focused on that research of hers."
- "Perhaps I'll steer clear of her, then."
Sulinus Vassinus will also add a comment when asked about the city:
- "Have you met Adrienne Berene, our Skingrad Mages Guild head? Not the most pleasant person, I'll admit. Don't mind her."
When asked about the Guild, Druja will instead remark:
- "Adrienne may read too much, but you should see the Summon spell she taught Vigge. He might teach you, if you're skilled enough."
The townsfolk of Skingrad have different opinions about the head of the local Mages Guild chapter. When asked about rumors they will say:
- "I hear Adrienne Berene is quite a mage. Of course, it's not like she'd bother to stop to talk to you in the street."
- "I think Adrienne Berene is the ranking mage at the Mages Guild in town. Typical snooty mage."
- "That's so typical for a mage."
- "I've got no interest in talking about some snooty mage."
NotesEdit
- Adrienne has a greeting that can never be heard due to her Mages Guild dialogue taking precedence; she would have briefly introduced herself to you by saying "I'm in charge here. Adrienne Berene. Do you have Mages Guild business?"
- Adrienne is the only Mages Guild head with a rank of Evoker rather than Wizard.
- The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.5.4, addresses this issue. Her rank has been increased to Wizard to be consistent with the other Guild heads.
- Despite Druja's comment, Adrienne does not have the ability to summon a Storm Atronach, or any creature for that matter. She is only able to cast Destruction spells.
BugsEdit
- There is a small inconsistency between dialogue and subtitle when Adrienne greets you at the start of the recommendation quest. The dialogue says "I trust you have a good reason for interrupting me?" while the subtitles say "I trust you have good reason for interrupting me?"
- The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.1.0, fixes this bug.
- A combination of Adrienne's Destruction skill level of 51 and her total available magicka results in her being unable to cast her Master-level spells as well as the Expert-level Fire Storm.

* Indicates spells which cannot be purchased from anyone else, though spells with the same effects at different magnitudes can be purchased elsewhere.
- The magicka cost for most purchasable spells matches the value you would calculate from the Spell Cost equation. In other words, if you were to create the same spell at the Spellmaking Altar, it would have the same magicka cost as the purchasable spell. There are a few exceptions. Spells that are a bad deal, i.e. more expensive than a custom spell, are in red; spells that are a good deal are in green. The magicka cost if you were to create a custom spell at the Spellmaking Altar is shown in parentheses.
- The magicka cost for spells is dependent upon your skill in the school (as modified by Luck, see Magic Overview). The provided baseline values are the magicka cost when your skill level is 33. For other skill levels the magicka cost can be determined from:
Cost * (1.4 - 0.012 * Skill)
- More powerful spells cost more to buy, have a higher skill requirement, and consume more Magicka.
- Level indicates what skill level you must reach (or surpass) in order to use a spell. Skill Level 0-24 = Novice, 25-49 = Apprentice, 50-74 = Journeyman, 75-99 = Expert, 100 = Master.
- The base cost in gold that you must pay to purchase a spell is always three times the current magicka cost of the spell, taking into account your character's skill level and Luck. (The actual cost you pay is further increased based on how well you haggle with the merchant.) Therefore, if you have any Fortify Skill or Fortify Luck spells/potions handy, you can get significantly better deals when purchasing spells.
