The Nerevarine (also referred to as the Incarnate) is the figure at the center of the Nerevarine Cult, which believes that Lord Indoril Nerevar will be reincarnated and return to Morrowind to defeat Dagoth Ur and restore the glory of Resdayn. Nerevar is said to have cursed the Ring of the Ancestors, One-Clan-Under-Moon-and-Star so that any other who tries to wear the ring would die instantly. Favored by Azura, Nerevar reborn is immune to disease and protected by the prophecy.
The timing of Nerevar's return is directly linked to the prophecy of The Stranger, where the Blight, Corprus and the Sleepers signal the Nerevarine's fulfilment of the prophecies.
Through the main quest, the player character becomes the Nerevarine, by progressing through the Seven Trials, becoming immune to all diseases, acquiring Moon-and-Star and being named Hortator and Nerevarine by the Great Houses and Ashlander Tribes of Vvardenfell, respectively, eventually fulfilling the Nerevarine Prophecies completely by working with the Dissident Priests.
NotesEdit
- The Nerevarine is the player character in Morrowind and so can be of either sex and any race during the game. The cutscene played when a new game of Morrowind is started includes the text "...ignorant of the role he was to play in that nation's history...". It is also later suggested by Neloth in Skyrim's Dragonborn add-on that the Nerevarine was male.
- Though stated by Michael Kirkbride in a 2015 post, he said to consider that line that Neloth calling the Nerevarine a "he" as "a glitch". Saying "That line was a mistake a designer made in haste."[UOL 1]
- If you fulfill the Morrowind main quest by non-standard means, such as the Back Path, you may never be declared Nerevarine. Azura will still refer to you as Nerevar in her monologue at the conclusion of the Tribunal main quest.
- The default name of the player character in the Construction Set is
player
(with a lowercase p). The ID that appears when you click on your character in the console isPlayerSaveGame
; however, you can useplayer
(orPlayer
) in reference to your character in Console commands and it will still work.
