Verglas Hollow (also called High Gate Ruins)[1] is an ancient Nordic barrow on the Frozen Coast, a region between Hjaalmarch and Pale holds of northwest Skyrim. The ruins have an infamous reputation for being haunted and cursed, and the unnatural cold that surrounded it made it impossible for people to approach it.[2] The old temple is a tomb for the Dragon Priest, Vokun[3] and for the longest time, people were unsure what was inside the ruin.[2]
HistoryEdit
The ruins were once an active temple run by the Dragon Cult until their downfall in the wake of the Dragon War. Its Dragon Priest, Vokun was buried in the temple's throne room.[1]
Sometime in 2E 577,[4] the necromancer, Maxten Favrete took residence in Verglas Hollow[5] after an incident in nearby Morthal. She hoped to find a way to cure her love of the curse she inflicted onto her but over time, shifted focus on building her necromantic talents.[6] Her lair in the innermost chamber of Verglas Hollow was completely covered in ice and riddled with the frozen corpses of her victims.[7] She employed a Pahmar-raht warrior named Zan'ikh to supply her with cadavers,[5] which became undead thralls called the Frost-Cursed.[8]
In 2E 582, the blizzards of the Frozen Coast waylaid the Silver Cormorant on the coast of the Solitude Inlet and Captain Mavvok worked together with his first mate, Drigsen to track Zan'ikh's movements and motives. An adventurer was able to find First Mate Drigsen, and together they defeated Zan'ikh and recovered Freiwen's amulet, which calmed the storm. The two decided to trek Verglas Hollow and found both the captain and Maxten Favrete. The adventurer destroyed Favrete's frost dais and ultimately ended both her life and her necromantic experiments. The storm had subsided and the Silver Cormorant returned to the sea.[9]
In 4E 201, a Nordic mage named Anska traveled all over to find an ancient scroll that could connect her family lineage to Ysgramor and eventually discovered it Vokun's tomb in High Gate Ruins. With help from another adventurer, they delved through the dungeon and defeated Vokun. Anska was able to retrieve the scroll but had to decrypt it, while, her companion took Vokun's steel mask for themselves.[10]
