Pelagius Septim IV was the twentieth emperor of the Septim Dynasty, ruling the Third Empire for twenty-nine years, from 3E 339 to 3E 368. He was preceded by his aunt, Morihatha, and was succeeded by his son, Uriel VII.[1]
BiographyEdit
Pelagius Septim was born in 3E 314 to Eloisa, a daughter of Uriel V and sister of Uriel VI and Morihatha.[1] In 3E 339, Empress Morihatha was assassinated.[1][2][3] Morihatha had no surviving children, and Eloisa had died of a fever in 3E 335, so Pelagius was crowned Emperor of Tamriel.[1][2][3] According to one source, shortly after his coronation, Pelagius IV and his family had dinner with Queen Barenziah of Morrowind and her consort Symmachus.[4] In 3E 346, his son, Uriel, was born.[1][2][5] At some point during his reign, Pelagius IV hired Lord Vanech's Building Commission to build and improve infrastructure in Black Marsh in order to increase commerce in the province.[6] During his reign, he was suspicious enough of the Psijic Order to refuse to allow their ambassadors into the Imperial City.[7] Pelagius IV continued Morihatha's efforts to reunite Tamriel, slowly bringing the rebellious kingdoms, duchies, and baronies back under imperial control.[1] Like Morihatha, Pelagius IV was patient and careful in his efforts to reunite Tamriel, but he did not achieve the same success she did.[1] The kingdoms, duchies, and baronies had been free of imperial control for so long that even a benign imperial presence was met with hostility.[1] Nevertheless, by the end of Pelagius IV's reign, the Empire was stable, prosperous, and closer to unity than it had been since the days of Uriel I.[1] In 3E 368, Pelagius IV died and was succeeded by his son, Uriel VII.[1][2][5] He was considered a strong and capable ruler.[8]
