Tsofeer Cavern, the original Ninth Legion's resting place

The Ninth Legion is a subdivision of the Imperial Legion, the militant arm of the Empire. The Ninth Legion was for the longest time defunct when it disappeared deep in Black Marsh and cemented themselves in local legend as the Lost Legion.[1] By the mid-Third Era, they were restored and played a minor role in Emperor Uriel Septim V's conquest of the eastern kingdoms between Tamriel and Akavir.[2]

HistoryEdit

The Ninth Legion was among the first legions to enter Black Marsh.[1] The first time the Imperial Legion invaded Black Marsh was in 1E 2811, with the Battle of Argonia. After the main Argonian forces fled into the deep interior, the Second Empire, under Emperor Reman II, launched a full-scale invasion of Black Marsh known as the Blackwater War.[3] The Ninth Legion was sent to Murkmire in south-central Black Marsh and caused mass destruction everywhere.[1] In time, they hired a local Argonian named Gin-Rajul, a well-respected scout of his time, even before he worked with the Ninth Legion.[4]

Gin-Rajul convinced the Ninth to camp out in Tsofeer Cavern,[4] a place highly avoided by Murkmire Argonians for containing the legendary vorplasm named Wuju-Ka.[5] Under the pretense of securing a powerful Argonian weapon, the Ninth stayed in Tsofeer but one by one, soldiers were disappearing as they were consumed by Wuju-Ka. It took some time before they realized they were tricked by Gin-Rajul.[4][6][7] To the people of Murkmire, the Ninth Legion was known for bringing death and destruction in their wake, but then suddenly disappearing without any trace. For his service with the Legion, Gin-Rajul and his egg-family were marked as traitors for many generations. The original Ninth was remembered as the Lost Legion, and tales and ballads have been passed around the tribes for years.[1]

Pieces of Ninth Legion memorabilia were passed around Murkmire for years, namely, badges worn by its members.[8] The Ninth Legion Commander's seal was an especially rare item.[9] In 2E 582, Gin-Rajul's descendant, Dradeiva traveled to Tsofeer Cavern after it re-opened to learn the truth about the Lost Legion and her ancestor's involvement. With help from an adventurer, they discovered the true story and Gin-Rajul's sacrifice, and using leftover notes and texts, Dradeiva met the other tribes and showed them proof of Gin-Rajul's heroism.[10]

By the mid-Third Era, the Ninth Legion was revived and later chosen by Emperor Uriel V to be reinforcements in the Expeditionary Force to invade Akavir, along with the Seventeenth Legion. After the Empire secured the beachfront on the Tsaesci kingdom and built their first colony called Septimia, the original plan was to bring the reinforcements to Akavir. It was later decided, however, that colonists were needed to support the Expeditionary Force, and with civil unresting breaking out in Yneslea, the Ninth and Seventeenth were left behind to secure the Force's supply lines and repacify the region. The reinforcement legions never fought on Akavir as the Expeditionary Force was ultimately wiped out, and supernatural storms prevented entry back to the continent.[2]

NotesEdit

  • The Might of the Lost Legion is a unique enchantment found in a ruined village north-northeast of Alten Meerhleel. This enchantment is infused into a crafting site in the ruins.[11] As theorized by the Khajiit adventurer, Pacrooti, sites like this are created by master craftworkers, who at the height of their artistry, manifest their talent and infuse them into their stations, so that any item crafted there would have the same quality as their original works.[12]
