Cassynder Septim (sometimes enumerated as Cassynder I)[1] was the fourteenth emperor of the Septim Dynasty, ruling the Third Empire for two years, from 3E 200 to 3E 202. He was preceded by his mother, Katariah, and was succeeded by his younger brother, Uriel IV.[2]

BiographyEdit

Cassynder Septim was born around the year 3E 150 and was the only child of Emperor Pelagius III and Empress Regent Katariah.[2][3] Katariah became pregnant with Cassynder after she visited Pelagius in his cell in the asylum where he had been committed due to his madness.[2][3] Cassynder had a younger half-brother, Uriel Lariat.[1][2] At some point, Cassynder became King of Wayrest, but by 3E 193, he was in poor health, so he abdicated in favor of Uriel, whom Cassynder had legally adopted.[1][2]

In 3E 200, Katariah was killed in a skirmish in Black Marsh; thus, Cassynder was crowned Emperor of Tamriel, but he was still in poor health.[2][3][4] Cassynder, the son of a Breton and a Dunmer, was half-elven, but he aged like a Breton, so when he acceded to the throne, he was already middle-aged.[2] Nevertheless, as the only true blood relation of Pelagius III, and thus Tiber Septim, he was obliged to accept the Ruby Throne.[2] The Elder Council assumed much responsibility during Cassynder's reign.[1] Cassynder's reign was short-lived, as he died only two years after acceding to the throne in 3E 202.[1][2][4][nb 1] Cassynder had no children, so Uriel was crowned Emperor Uriel Septim IV.[1][2]

By the Fourth Era, a haunted fort near the town of Rivercrest bore his name.[5][6]

NotesEdit

  • ^  Brief History of the Empire makes two contradictory statements regarding Cassynder's year of death. First, it says that "in two years, [after his reign began] he was dead"; In the next volume, however, it contradicts itself by saying that Cassynder died "three years after [his accession]". It is likely that the second statement is incorrect, as The Third Era Timeline lists Cassynder's death as occurring in 3E 202, which is two years after he became emperor.
