The Bittercup (or Bitter Cup[1]) is an artifact sacred to Clavicus Vile, the Daedric Prince of Bargains. It is prized by the Daedra Lord's followers. Only the strongest of the Emperor's servants are advised to make covenant with Prince Clavicus, and even then are warned against sipping from the Bittercup.[UOL 1]
At some point, the Bittercup came into the possession of a wielder of the Vampiric Ring, a War-Wizard that lived in the ancient tower of Ald Redaynia on an island in Sheogorad. This War-Wizard eventually passed away, and his skeleton continued to live on in the tower, guarding the Bittercup.[2]
In the late Third Era, the Camonna Tong allied themselves with the Fighters Guild Master in Vvardenfell, Sjoring Hard-Heart. The alliance used the Fighters Guild as an extension of the Camonna Tong's influence, hunting down and eliminating the struggling Thieves Guild to prevent them gaining a foothold in Vvardenfell.[3] Circa 3E 427, the leader of the local Thieves Guild chapter, Gentleman Jim Stacey, allied himself with the Fighters Guild's former guildmaster, Percius Mercius, in order to put a stop to the corruption. Using the information Percius provided to him, he sent the Nerevarine to Ald Redaynia to retrieve the Bittercup in an attempt to use it to bribe Eydis Fire-Eye, one of Sjoring's supporters. The Nerevarine slew the War-Wizard guarding the Bittercup, and recovered both artifacts from the ruins.[1]
Circa 4E 201, a Nord mage named Rulnik Wind-Strider came upon a mysterious altar at the Roadside Ruins north of Falkreath. There, he met an old woman who appeared to be its keeper. She explained that he needed to choose a bowl from the altar: the first would grant him power, the second would bring him fortune, and the third would offer nothing at all.[4] Stricken with ataxia, Rulnik continued on his journey after this encounter, but ended up in the care of the Temple of Kynareth in Whiterun.[5] The Last Dragonborn subsequently came across the same altar by following Rulnik's trail, although it is unknown which bowl was chosen or whether Rulink's illness was cured. Regardless, the Dragonborn was given the Bittercup by Clavicus Vile as a reward for having made a choice.[5][6]
