Anticlere (city) in the region

Anticlere (formerly known as Reich Gradkeep)[1][2] is the capital of the eponymous region in the Iliac Bay region of southern High Rock.[3] The town received its modern name from Lord Auberon Flyte, who renamed it in honor of his family, the ancestral house of Anticlere.[4]

Anticlere Palace

Anticlere is located northwest of the large bay in the southern Anticlere region, specifically north of the island within its border. It is a walled city with the palace south of the shopping plaza and the cemetery southeast of the palace.[3] Reich Gradkeep is neighbored by several settlements, including Daggerfall to the west and Glenpoint to the north.[5]

HistoryEdit

Lord-Mayor Perwright

Reich Gradkeep was originally built by the Nords of the Nordic Empire.[6] At the time, the Skyrim Conquests took place over the course of fifty years in the early First Era and it was High King Vrage who helmed this era of expansionism.[7] High Rock was later liberated from the Nords in 1E 369, after High King Borgas died in battle and infighting took over in Skyrim.[8] Reich Gradkeep gradually became assimilated by the local Bretons and has since been populated by them.[6]

In 1E 1427, the Duke of Anticlere rallied his people to fight in the Battle of Duncreigh Bridge, a conflict against a neighboring settlement called Sensford. The burghers of Anticlere still proudly boast their "famous victory" by marching every year through Sensford's main street. These celebrations always end in violence since injuries occur on both sides and brief wars break out between knightly orders. Despite the battle, both ruling families boast the lineage's superiority.[9]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the village of Reich Gradkeep was an active settlement. It was ruled by Lady Chrystorya and had a rivalry with Glenpoint.[1] At the start of the fifth century, fractious wars broke out across Tamriel and the War of Betony turned the Iliac Bay region into a battlefield. Lord Graddock, sovereign of Reich Gradkeep decided to host a peace summit between Daggerfall and Sentinel in his castle in the capital city. The treaty was never fully realized as chaos abrupted in the palace and despite Lord and Lady Graddocks' attempt to appease it, the palace was the site of a bloodbath that only escalated across Reich Gradkeep. Both monarchs and their daughter, Mara Graddock were killed in the chaos. The city was devastated and opportunistic looters stole from merchants.[4]

The only heir to Lord Graddock was a sickly infant so his cousin, Auberon Flyte usurped the throne as a regency. Even though his reign was dictatorial, the people respected him and were grateful. When the infant died, Auberon Flyte was able to acquire complete control and in honor of his ancestral house, renamed both the town and region, Anticlere. When he contracted the Guedoilic Plague from an Argonian ambassador, however, all of his affairs as ruler were passed to his wife, Doryanna Flyte. The Mayor of Anticlere, Perwright disproved of this decision but feared the repercussions of telling Lord Flyte. Rumors stated that the Doryanna Flyte was in league with the Thieves Guild leader of Anticlere and assisted him in midnight raids around town.[4]

By the late-Third Era, the Fiefdom of Anticlere hosted the Benevolence of Mara.[3] When the Warp in the West took place in 3E 417, Anticlere and many other regions in the Bretonic-Iliac Bay were absorbed into the major kingdoms. However, Anticlere has split east and west between the Kingdoms of Daggerfall and Wayrest,[10] and border skirmishes had become prevalent over years.[6] Where the capital city fell in this new border is currently unknown.

Known RulersEdit

The Mayor of Anticlere is a separate entity from the ruler of the Anticlere region.[4]
