Detailed WalkthroughEdit
This quest can be started two ways: either through the Town Gossip topic, or by speaking to Olivia Valerius in the graveyard at night. Either way, you have to have gained 5 points of Leyawiin reputation.
Once you've spotted the ghost (you can't talk to her yet), you'll have to look around for someone who can help you. Tsavi, the court wizard, knew Olivia when she was alive; she'll suggest you talk to Elendar, the cemetery caretaker. Elendar will tell you that he was in love with her, and that she was poisoned, but he doesn't know who did it or why. He knows of a way to communicate with her, but he needs a personal item - you'll have to talk to the family.
Borgunna is one to find. She'll give you a ring that was precious to Olivia, but she wants you to do something for her first: her lover was imprisoned, and you need to help him flee the city. This leads to the quest Foolish Youth. If you successfully complete that quest, she'll give you the ring; take it to Elendar, and he'll send you to Dagail so she can work her magic on it.
Of course, Dagail can't do anything unless she has her amulet; you must have completed Leyawiin Recommendation. If you have, she'll take the amulet and tell you to come back tomorrow. Return the next day to retrieve the ring, then you can go talk to Olivia. She'll pass along message for her husband and Elendar, and finally tells you that you need to find a letter that she was reading when she died. Talk to Manius Valerius; he'll tell you that he burned all her things after she died, but that Tsavi took a diary - you should talk to her. Tsavi will give you the diary, but it doesn't have anything useful - you'll have to go back to Olivia. She'll tell you that she was writing letters to Ida Vlinorman in the Imperial City, so it's off to the capital.
Unfortunately, this is also a dead end - Ida says she didn't write the letter Olivia was reading when she died. You'll get another journal entry pointing back to Tsavi; she'll tell you that the letter came with some lotion and that you should talk to Manius again. He, in turn, suggests you search Elendar's home - he thinks the Altmer had something to do with Olivia's death. Search carefully, and you'll find a crumpled piece of paper on the floor between the counter and the food cupboard - it's a forged letter purportedly from Ida Vlinorman. You'll get a journal entry telling you to take it to Manius, but Elendar will find you along the way and try to plead his case - he wants to take Olivia's spirit with him to Summerset Isle.
Talk to Olivia again, and she'll tell you that she doesn't want to pass on. Now you have a choice - bind her to Elendar, or blame him for Olivia's death. Each leads to a different quest, so choose wisely.

- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage BANLeyawiinGhost stage, wherestageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
